Job Overview: The Peace Building Officer will play a crucial role in the Danish Refugee Council's efforts to foster peace and social cohesion in conflict-affected areas, specifically within the Sheraro Field Office in Ethiopia. This position involves a variety of responsibilities centered around conflict resolution, peacebuilding initiatives, and community engagement. The officer will be tasked with implementing conflict early warning systems, facilitating trauma healing processes, and promoting dialogue among community members. The role requires collaboration with various stakeholders, including local authorities, community structures, and project partners, to develop sustainable peacebuilding strategies. The Peace Building Officer will also organize workshops and community dialogues aimed at enhancing social cohesion and reconciliation, while monitoring the impact of these initiatives to contribute to positive social change.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Peace Building Officer will be responsible for a comprehensive set of duties, including:
Supporting the peacebuilding component of projects by overseeing project activities, managing budgets, and ensuring timely reporting.
Conducting participatory conflict and conflict sensitivity analyses through community consultations to identify drivers of instability and opportunities for peace.
Establishing peacebuilding committees that include diverse community members such as women, youth, and displaced persons, and providing training on negotiation and non-violent conflict resolution.
Developing early warning action plans in collaboration with community representatives and key stakeholders.
Supporting civil society organizations and local initiatives that promote peace and respond to conflict displacement through skills reinforcement.
Facilitating community dialogue forums and trauma healing sessions at both local and regional levels.
Establishing joint working groups and integrating conflict-sensitive programming principles into project interventions to mitigate potential conflicts.
Ensuring effective coordination with authorities and other organizations to avoid duplication of efforts.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a minimum of two years of professional experience in conflict and peacebuilding, preferably within an NGO setting. A strong command of English, both written and spoken, is essential, along with good computer skills, particularly in MS Word and MS Excel. Applicants should have a solid understanding of working in conflict-prone and insecure areas, demonstrating excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Personal attributes such as creativity, initiative, and the ability to work under pressure are highly valued. The ideal candidate should also exhibit strong performance management skills, with a focus on self-improvement and team development.
Educational Background: A Bachelor’s degree in Peace Studies, Conflict Management, Law, Psychology, Social Studies, or related fields is required for this position. Relevant certifications or licenses in conflict resolution or peacebuilding will be considered an asset.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of two years of relevant professional experience in conflict and peacebuilding, particularly in an NGO context. Candidates should have a proven track record of working in challenging environments and possess the ability to adapt to difficult conditions.
Languages: Full proficiency in English is mandatory, along with proficiency in a local language. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an advantage, particularly in enhancing communication with diverse community members.
Additional Notes: The contract for this position is for a duration of 9 months, classified as a National Contract under Band H2 – Non-Management. The designated duty station is the Sheraro Field Office, with a start date of April 15, 202
