The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat, established to promote sustainable and inclusive development and enhance regional connectivity in the Asia and Pacific region. The Centre for Sustainable Agricultural Mechanization (CSAM), based in Beijing, China, is a regional institute of ESCAP that focuses on enhancing technical cooperation among member states through knowledge sharing, research, and development in sustainable agricultural mechanization and technology, contributing to the achievement of internationally agreed development goals, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Job Overview:

Interns will work full-time, typically five days a week, under the supervision of a staff member in the division or office to which they are assigned. The internship is unpaid and has a minimum duration of two months, with the possibility of extension up to six months. Interns will be involved in various tasks that align with their academic background and the needs of the organization, contributing to ongoing projects and initiatives that support sustainable development in the Asia and Pacific region.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will have a diverse range of responsibilities that may include: providing support to ongoing projects related to sustainable agricultural mechanization; assisting in social media outreach efforts to promote ESCAP's initiatives; offering administrative support to ensure smooth operations within the office; working on presentations to communicate project findings and updates; consolidating and sorting data to assist in research and analysis efforts. The specific duties will vary based on the intern's background and the duration of their internship, allowing for a tailored experience that enhances their skills and knowledge in the field.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following qualifications: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). This ensures that candidates possess the necessary academic foundation to contribute effectively to the work of ESCAP.

Educational Background:
Candidates should have a strong academic background relevant to the work of ESCAP, particularly in fields related to sustainable development, agricultural sciences, social sciences, or other related disciplines. A graduate degree or a bachelor's degree nearing completion is preferred, as this internship is aimed at individuals who are either pursuing advanced studies or have recently completed their education.

Experience:
While prior work experience is not mandatory, any relevant experience in research, project management, or administrative roles will be considered an asset. Interns should demonstrate a willingness to learn and adapt to the fast-paced environment of an international organization, as well as the ability to work collaboratively within a team.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for the internship programme, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as it is another working language of the organization. Proficiency in additional languages relevant to the Asia and Pacific region may be considered an advantage, enhancing communication and outreach efforts.
