Job Overview: The Associate Director position within the Energy team at the Environment and Sustainability Department is a pivotal role that requires a seasoned professional with extensive experience in Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA) within the energy sector. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring compliance with the Bank's Environmental and Social Policy, overseeing the appraisal and monitoring of high-risk projects, and providing specialist input across various sectors. This role involves collaboration with banking teams and other departments to drive sustainable development initiatives and ensure adherence to environmental and social standards. The Associate Director will also engage with stakeholders, manage complex projects, and contribute to the continuous improvement of internal processes and methodologies.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Associate Director will be tasked with managing and overseeing a range of projects, particularly those that are complex and high-risk. Key responsibilities include:
Technically managing projects and providing specialist input, ensuring compliance with Environmental and Social Policy (ESP) and assessing environmental and social risks and impacts.
Overseeing project coordination, managing outputs and outcomes, and conducting analytical reviews.
Liaising with EBRD staff, clients, and consultants to negotiate contract terms and ensure effective communication.
Representing ESD at various forums and meetings, both internally and externally, to advocate for environmental and social best practices.
Delivering capacity-building initiatives and mentoring junior staff on relevant environmental and social matters.
Contributing to the preparation of sustainability-related reporting and ensuring adherence to the Bank's sustainability methodologies.
Engaging with senior governmental counterparts to support the delivery of the EBRD's Environmental and Social Policy.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a degree in environmental and/or social sciences, economics, engineering, or a related field, along with a proven track record in appraising complex environmental and social risks. Knowledge of international environmental and social standards, such as those set by the EBRD and IFC, is essential. Candidates should demonstrate strong project management skills, the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams, and effective communication skills to convey complex policy issues to diverse stakeholders. Familiarity with the countries in which the EBRD operates is also advantageous.
Educational Background: A relevant degree in environmental and/or social sciences, economics, engineering, or a related field is required. Comparable professional experience may also be considered in lieu of formal education. Candidates should have a strong understanding of environmental and social standards and guidelines, as well as financing instruments and policies relevant to the EBRD's operations.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have significant experience in the energy sector, particularly in conducting Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA) and managing high-risk projects.
