Job Overview: The Close Protection Officer plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and security of UN personnel, particularly those in high-risk situations. Duties and Responsibilities: The Close Protection Officer will be responsible for a comprehensive set of duties, including but not limited to: coordinating personal protection planning and operations in line with UN policies; providing guidance to close protection units; producing and coordinating operational plans; liaising with host country authorities and other mission components; ensuring compliance with UN methodologies; preparing post-operation reports; conducting security risk assessments; coordinating training and exercises for close protection personnel; assessing the performance of close protection officers; contributing to the mission's budget proposals; and performing additional duties as assigned. The officer will also be expected to provide risk briefings to principals and ensure that all operations are conducted with the utmost professionalism and adherence to safety protocols.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, with additional qualifications such as the UNDSS Close Protection Supervisor Certification (CPSC) being desirable. A certification in first aid or equivalent is also preferred. Candidates should demonstrate a high standard of physical fitness and relevant training in military or police procedures, self-defense techniques, and specialized security practices. Training in martial arts, UN weapons training, and investigation techniques is also advantageous. The role requires a strong understanding of security policies and procedures, as well as the ability to remain calm and effective in high-pressure situations.
Educational Background: The minimum educational requirement for this position is a high school diploma or equivalent. Candidates with a first-level university degree will be considered favorably, particularly if they have relevant technical or vocational certifications. Experience: Candidates must have a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in close protection, with at least five years of experience required for those holding a first-level university degree. A minimum of two years of experience in close protection management at the level of a close protection team leader is essential. Furthermore, candidates should have at least one year of experience in an international context, particularly in conflict or post-conflict environments. Proficiency in the use of close protection weapons, communications, surveillance equipment, and vehicles is required, along with experience in conducting close protection training and operations.
Languages: The working languages of the United Nations Secretariat are English and French. For this position, proficiency in both languages is mandatory. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in both languages, as per the UN Language Framework. This includes the ability to speak and write clearly, listen actively, and tailor communication to suit different audiences. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset but is not required for this position.
