Job Overview: This internship is located at the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD), which is administered by UNEP and is situated in Montreal. The intern will work under the overall supervision of the Senior ProgrammeManagement Unit of the Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS) Unit and the direct supervision of the DSI Programme Management Officer. The internship is designed to provide practical experience in promoting the Cali Fund to various stakeholders, including the general public, through the creation and maintenance of the Cali Fund's social media channels. The intern will be responsible for developing social media content for platforms such as LinkedIn, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram, including video materials and storytelling. Additionally, the intern will assist in maintaining and updating the Cali Fund website, ensuring it remains current and relevant. The internship is unpaid and has a duration of six months, starting in early March 2026.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will have a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to: assisting with the maintenance of social media accounts for the Cali Fund on platforms such as LinkedIn, X, and Instagram; maintaining the Cali Fund website; using Canva to develop and update Cali Fund guides; creating communication products related to the multilateral mechanism on digital sequence information on genetic resources and the Cali Fund through research and drafting; supporting the implementation of the strategy for work related to DSI and the Cali Fund under the guidance of the Programme Management Officer and UN collaborators; working with the communications unit to promote existing communications materials and creating new collateral; assisting with translations; monitoring the success of social media posts based on analytics; participating in meetings with other UN entities on the communication strategy; supporting the organization and preparation of meetings for the ABS Unit; and assisting in other duties as requested by the Executive Secretary. All content prepared by the intern will be subject to prior review and clearance by the supervisor and/or the Communications Unit, and the intern will not independently engage with media or external stakeholders.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements at the time of application: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree. Additionally, applicants must be computer literate in standard software applications, demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations, and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. Candidates should also have the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs, showing tolerance and understanding of differing opinions and views.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this internship includes being enrolled in or having completed a graduate school programme, or being in the final year of a first university degree programme. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent is necessary. Candidates who have graduated with a university degree are also eligible to apply. This educational requirement ensures that interns possess the necessary academic foundation to contribute effectively to the work of the United Nations.
