Job Posting Organization:
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is a global organization established by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. It serves as the focal point for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system. UN-Habitat collaborates with partners in over 90 countries, working towards building inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and communities through knowledge sharing, policy advice, technical assistance, and collaborative action. The organization operates under a three-tier governance structure, which includes the UN-Habitat Assembly, the Executive Board, and the Committee of Permanent Representatives, ensuring effective oversight of its activities. The Regional Office for Africa (ROAF) engages with nearly 40 African governments to develop strategies for sustainable urban development, with a diverse portfolio of ongoing projects across the continent. The Kenya Country Office (KCO) plays a strategic role within the broader framework of UN-Habitat, having implemented over 30 projects since 2010 across 22 counties in Kenya, including significant initiatives like the Partnership Implementing the New Urban Agenda (PINUA) and various cross-border projects.

Job Overview:
The consultant will play a crucial role in supporting knowledge management under the Partnership for Implementing the New Urban Agenda (PINUA) project. This position involves developing knowledge management tools through the Affordable Housing Knowledge Management Hub (AHP Hub) and promoting learning and replication of best practices at various levels. The consultant will be responsible for co-creating knowledge management strategies that add value, foster innovation, and institutionalize best practices within the housing value chain in Kenya. The role also includes disseminating best practices through a housing management information system, ensuring that the knowledge generated is effectively utilized by stakeholders including government, civil society, and local communities. The consultant will work closely with various teams to ensure alignment with the Government of Kenya’s Affordable Housing Programme and UN-Habitat’s objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will be tasked with several key responsibilities, including:
  • Consolidating and documenting data and information from housing and slum upgrading specialists, ensuring alignment with the Government of Kenya’s Affordable Housing Programme.
  • Developing relevant knowledge products such as reports, presentations, and manuals that comply with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Conducting a knowledge management audit and developing a comprehensive strategy for collecting, storing, and disseminating best practices.
  • Establishing a relationship framework to enhance collaboration among stakeholders and facilitating knowledge exchange engagements.
  • Providing feedback and recommendations on new tools and technologies to improve knowledge management processes.
  • Supporting the production of UN-Habitat’s normative work on housing and urban development.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a first-level university degree in information and knowledge management or a related field. An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in the same or a related field is desirable. A minimum of four years of progressively responsible experience in information and knowledge management, organizational learning, or related fields is required, with at least two years of experience in developing knowledge management strategies and digital tools. Experience working within national policies related to housing or urban planning in Africa is highly desirable, as is proven experience in delivering knowledge management assignments for the UN or other international agencies.

Educational Background:
The position requires a first-level university degree in information and knowledge management or a related field. An advanced degree (Master's or equivalent) in the same or a related field is preferred, indicating a higher level of expertise and understanding of the complexities involved in knowledge management.

Experience:
The consultant should have a minimum of four years of progressively responsible experience in information and knowledge management, organizational learning, or related fields. At least two years of this experience should involve developing knowledge management strategies, digital tools, and related training programs. Experience in aligning with national policies in housing or urban planning within Africa is highly desirable, as is experience working with the UN or other international organizations.

Languages:
Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required for this position, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of a local language is considered an added advantage, enhancing communication with local stakeholders and communities.
