Job Overview:
The Driver position at UNHCR involves not only driving official vehicles but also ensuring the upkeep and maintenance of these vehicles according to the technical guidance and specifications established by the organization. The incumbent will be responsible for transporting authorized personnel, delivering and collecting documents, and facilitating immigration and customs formalities when necessary. The role requires a strong understanding of the local area, including major routes and traffic patterns in Lagos, and the ability to communicate effectively in English for reporting incidents and completing documentation. The ideal candidate will have a clean driving record and experience in safe and defensive driving practices, which may be evidenced through training certificates or relevant work experience. The position is critical in supporting the operational needs of UNHCR and ensuring the safety and efficiency of transportation services.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Driver will be responsible for the following duties: driving UNHCR vehicles for the transport of authorized passengers, delivering and collecting documents and other items, and meeting official personnel at airports or other locations while facilitating immigration and customs formalities as required. The incumbent must perform day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicles, including checking oil, water, battery, brakes, tires, and ensuring that the vehicles are roadworthy and maintained to established security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security standards. Minor repairs may be performed, and arrangements for other repairs should be made as necessary. The Driver is also responsible for keeping the vehicle clean and logging official trips, daily mileage, gas consumption, oil changes, and greasing. It is essential to follow strict instructions and security guidance provided by the supervisor and security focal point, ensuring valid documentation for passengers, items, or cargo in the vehicle. The Driver will also support the identification and management of risks and seek to seize opportunities impacting objectives in the area of responsibility, raising any risks, issues, or concerns to a supervisor or relevant functional colleagues. Additional related duties may be required as necessary.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a valid national driving license and have a minimum of 3 years of professional driving experience in Southwest Nigeria. A verifiable clean driving record with no at-fault accidents or major traffic violations within the last 3 years is essential. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, sufficient for understanding instructions, reporting incidents, and completing basic documentation. Prior experience with UN, INGO, or international organizations is preferred, along with formal exposure to safe and defensive driving practices, evidenced through training certificates or work experience. Knowledge of road traffic regulations and practical experience applying safety and defensive driving standards in daily operations is also required.

Educational Background:
The minimum educational requirement for this position is the completion of Primary Education or a High School Diploma. Candidates with higher educational qualifications are encouraged to apply, as they may be viewed favorably during the selection process. However, the emphasis is primarily on relevant driving experience and skills rather than formal educational credentials.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least 3 years of professional driving experience, specifically within Southwest Nigeria. This experience should include a thorough understanding of local traffic patterns, routes, and landmarks, particularly within Lagos. Experience working with international organizations or in a similar capacity is highly desirable, as it demonstrates familiarity with the operational context of UNHCR and the specific requirements of the role.

Languages:
Proficiency in English is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary language of communication within UNHCR. Knowledge of any additional UN working languages relevant to the duty station is advantageous. For General Service jobs, knowledge of English and/or the UN working language of the duty station is required, along with proficiency in the local language being beneficial.
