FAO collaborates with the Government of Bangladesh, particularly with the Department of Environment (DoE) and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), to implement a Global Environment Facility (GEF-8) financed project that focuses on the integrated management of Ecologically Critical Areas (ECAs).

Job Overview:
The National Biodiversity Specialist position is crucial for integrating climate resilience into the management of Ecologically Critical Areas (ECAs). The incumbent will guide climate risk assessments and translate findings into practical ecosystem-based and nature-based solutions. This role supports climate-resilient restoration efforts, ensures policy coherence with national frameworks, and documents adaptation and mitigation benefits in accordance with GEF and FAO standards. The position requires collaboration with various stakeholders, including the Project Team Leader and National PPG Coordinator, to develop criteria for identifying project sites and establish biodiversity baselines. The specialist will also provide technical guidance on sustainable management practices for forests, wetlands, and coastal resources, and will be involved in training programs focused on biodiversity conservation and climate-resilient livelihoods.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the National Biodiversity Specialist include collaborating with the Project Team Leader and National PPG Coordinator to develop criteria for identifying project sites, establishing biodiversity baselines, and defining project areas using available literature and data. The specialist will provide technical guidance on sustainable management of various ecosystems, support the establishment of marine or bird museums, and design training programs on biodiversity conservation. Additionally, the specialist will identify potential target locations for the project, analyze and document information relevant to biodiversity management, synthesize information on threats to biodiversity, and contribute recommendations for project interventions. Other functions may be required as necessary.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s or PhD) in natural resources management, environmental sciences, agriculture, plant genetic resources, biodiversity conservation, or related fields. A minimum of nine years of relevant professional experience with a strong background in biodiversity and ecosystems in target ECAs or fragile areas is required. Candidates must also have a working knowledge of English at Level C and must be nationals of Bangladesh.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree, either a Master's or a PhD, in fields related to natural resources management, environmental sciences, agriculture, plant genetic resources, or biodiversity conservation.
