The initiative is supported by a Secretariat that ensures coherence, alignment, and technical support for regional programs, responding to requests from the Strategic and Operational Committee, and facilitating collaboration with UN agencies and civil society.

Job Overview:
The Digital Editor position under the Spotlight Initiative involves a range of responsibilities centered around the creation and management of digital content for the initiative's website and campaigns. The role requires the editor to conceptualize, develop, write, and edit engaging content that aligns with the initiative's goals and branding. The Digital Editor will work closely with various teams and stakeholders, including UN agencies and civil society partners, to produce human interest stories and maintain an editorial calendar. The position also entails ensuring that all content is accurate, timely, and adheres to journalistic standards. The Digital Editor will be responsible for copy-editing publications, managing the website's functionality, and coordinating translations of web content. This role is crucial for enhancing the visibility and impact of the Spotlight Initiative's work in ending violence against women and girls.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Plan, research, write, edit, and publish stories and content for Spotlight Initiative channels, collaborating with teams and communications focal points to develop human interest stories.
  • Regularly update website content and foster relationships with stakeholders to promote collaboration and knowledge sharing.
  • Develop and maintain a digital content editorial calendar, producing engaging copy for digital content and campaigns, including newsletters.
  • Work with the Public Information Officer and Social Media Content and Video Editor to create scripts and ensure integration between the website and social media channels.
  • Copy-edit and review all social media content for consistency with UN Editorial standards.
  • Produce and edit written content for the Secretariat, including Annual Reports and Impact Reports.
  • Contribute to drafting scripts, op-eds, speeches, and video messages for events and leadership.
  • Adapt editorial approaches to meet the evolving needs of the Secretariat as the initiative progresses.
  • Manage and deliver storytelling training and workshops to build capacity within the team and broader community. 1
  • Maintain and monitor the Spotlight Initiative website, ensuring quality and adherence to guidelines. 1
  • Coordinate in-house translations of web content and monitor deadlines for posting. 1
  • Carry out any additional duties assigned by the Global Communications Lead or Technical Advisor.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess advanced university degrees in Journalism, Communications, International Development, or a related field, or equivalent work experience. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Candidates should have at least 5 years of relevant professional experience in news reporting, journalistic writing, editing, or communications, preferably within the UN or private sector. Strong writing, editing, and fact-checking skills are essential, along with experience in web development and content management systems. A solid understanding of online storytelling and the ability to work collaboratively with a large international network of contributors is also required. Familiarity with the goals and objectives of the Spotlight Initiative is crucial, as is proven experience in building communications capacity within organizations and leading inter-agency UN projects.

Educational Background:
The position requires advanced university degrees in fields such as Journalism, Communications, or International Development. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted. This educational background ensures that candidates have the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively manage and produce high-quality digital content.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in areas such as news reporting, journalistic writing, editing, or communications. This experience should ideally include work within both the UN and private sectors, demonstrating a strong understanding of the nuances of communication in diverse environments. Experience in writing, editing, fact-checking, and copy-editing is essential, as well as familiarity with web development and content management systems. Candidates should also have a proven track record of working closely with a large, international network of contributors and leading inter-agency projects.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position. Additional language skills, particularly in French and Spanish, would be advantageous, especially for coordinating translations of web content and engaging with a broader audience.
