Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is a leading intergovernmental organization that provides services and advice concerning migration to governments and migrants alike. Established in 1951, IOM has grown to include over 173 member states and operates in more than 100 countries worldwide. The organization aims to promote humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all, focusing on the needs of vulnerable populations and ensuring their rights are protected. IOM's mission is to support governments in managing migration effectively and to provide assistance to migrants in need, thereby contributing to global development and stability.

Job Overview:
The role of the Online Volunteer Translator is crucial in supporting IOM's communication and outreach activities in eastern Chad. The primary function of this position is to translate three short video interviews from Arabic (Sudanese dialect) into English. These interviews feature project beneficiaries who share their experiences and the impact of IOM's interventions on their lives. The translated content will be used to create English subtitles, which will enhance the visibility of IOM's work and support advocacy efforts. Volunteers will be expected to accurately transcribe the audio, translate it while maintaining the original meaning and tone, and provide time-stamped translations to facilitate subtitle integration. This role not only contributes to the organization's mission but also plays a part in achieving several Sustainable Development Goals, including reducing poverty, promoting social cohesion, and ensuring justice and strong institutions.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Listen to and accurately transcribe the Arabic (Sudanese) audio from three interview videos.
  • Translate the transcripts into clear, natural English while preserving the meaning and tone of the speakers.
  • Provide time-stamped translations (start and end times) aligned with the spoken segments to facilitate subtitle integration.
  • Review and revise translations to ensure quality, consistency, and readability for subtitles.
  • Collaborate with IOM staff to understand the target audience and communication guidelines.
  • Ensure that the translations reflect the cultural context and nuances of the original language.
  • Submit completed translations by the agreed deadlines to support timely communication and reporting.

Required Qualifications:
  • Proficiency in Arabic (Sudanese dialect) and English, with excellent translation skills.
  • Strong listening skills and attention to detail to ensure accurate transcription and translation.
  • Experience in translation, particularly in the context of humanitarian or development work, is preferred.
  • Familiarity with subtitling formats and requirements is an advantage.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate with IOM staff and understand project objectives.

Educational Background:
A background in languages, translation, linguistics, or a related field is preferred. Formal education in these areas can enhance the candidate's qualifications, but relevant experience and skills may also be considered.

Experience:
Previous experience in translation, especially in humanitarian or development contexts, is highly desirable. Candidates should demonstrate a track record of producing high-quality translations and may be asked to provide samples of their work. Familiarity with the challenges faced by vulnerable communities and an understanding of the socio-political context in Chad will be beneficial.

Languages:
Mandatory: Proficiency in Arabic (Sudanese dialect) and English. Good to have: Knowledge of additional languages spoken in the region may be advantageous but is not required.

Additional Notes:
This position is voluntary and does not offer financial compensation. The role is remote, allowing volunteers to work from anywhere. The duration of the task is flexible, but timely completion of translations is essential to align with IOM's communication and reporting timelines. Volunteers will receive guidance and support from IOM staff throughout the process.
