Job Overview: The UN Volunteer position within the Events and Outreach Unit of UN-Habitat is designed to support the organization and execution of key events that align with the agency's strategic goals. The role involves managing content for various event websites, including Urban October, World Habitat Day, World Cities Day, and the World Urban Forum (WUF). The volunteer will ensure that the content is accurate, timely, and user-friendly, thereby enhancing the overall user experience. Additionally, the volunteer will assist in maintaining the Global Event Management System (GEMS), which is crucial for managing event-related information and participant data. This position also entails monitoring digital engagement and outreach efforts, analyzing user interaction with digital platforms, and providing support for online registration and feedback tools. The volunteer will contribute to knowledge management by documenting lessons learned and sharing recommendations for continuous improvement, ultimately supporting UN-Habitat's mission to promote sustainable urbanization and improve the quality of life in urban settings.
Duties and Responsibilities: The UN Volunteer will undertake a variety of tasks under the direct supervision of the Head of the Events and Outreach unit. Key responsibilities include:
Website & Content Management: Supporting event websites by ensuring content is accurate, timely, and user-friendly; moderating and reviewing uploaded content for relevance and quality control.
GEMS Support: Posting and maintaining program-related information in GEMS, ensuring schedules and participant data are up to date; collecting and analyzing user feedback on GEMS functionality and proposing improvements.
Digital Engagement & Outreach: Monitoring and tracking user interaction with digital platforms; compiling analytics on web traffic and engagement.
Information Systems & ICT Support: Assisting with the integration of online registration and feedback tools into event workflows; testing new digital features to enhance event reporting.
Knowledge Management & Capacity Building: Documenting lessons learned from digital systems deployment and sharing recommendations for improvement; performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor. Additionally, the volunteer is expected to strengthen their understanding of volunteerism and engage in UNV activities.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment. Proficiency in digital content management and familiarity with event management systems are essential. The ideal candidate should demonstrate excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and have a proactive approach to problem-solving. Familiarity with sustainable urban development concepts and the UN's mission is highly desirable. Candidates should also be adaptable and willing to learn new technologies and systems as needed.
Educational Background: A bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as communications, public relations, international relations, or urban studies is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in event management or digital communications would be an advantage. Candidates should have a strong academic background that supports their understanding of the UN's objectives and the principles of sustainable development.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of one year of relevant experience in event management, digital content creation, or communications. Experience working with international organizations or in a volunteer capacity is highly valued. Candidates should demonstrate a track record of successfully managing projects and collaborating with diverse stakeholders. Familiarity with the UN system and its operations is a plus, as is experience in using digital tools for engagement and outreach.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the working language of UN-Habitat. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly French or Spanish, is considered an asset and may enhance the candidate's profile, especially in terms of engaging with a broader range of stakeholders.
Additional Notes: The contract duration is subject to availability of funding and operational necessity, with the possibility of extensions based on satisfactory performance. The UN Volunteer will receive a Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) to cover basic needs, which is adjusted based on the cost of living in Kenya. Additional benefits include life, health, and disability insurance, as well as travel allowances for official duties. The position is classified as a non-family duty station, and volunteers may receive a Well-Being Differential in accordance with ICSC classifications. A settling-in grant is provided for those relocating to the duty station, and a resettlement allowance is available upon satisfactory completion of the assignment.
