Job Overview:
The Online Volunteer position at OHCHR's Regional Office for Southern Africa is designed to support the office in achieving its strategic objectives, particularly in the areas of communications and advocacy. The volunteer will work closely with the Public Information Officer (PIO) to enhance the effectiveness of messaging across various platforms. This role is pivotal in ensuring that the office's communications are cohesive and impactful, thereby contributing to the overall mission of promoting human rights in the region. The volunteer will gain valuable experience in internal and external communications within a UN agency, which will enhance their skills in collaboration and strategic communication. The position involves drafting and reviewing communication materials, developing strategies for events and campaigns, and ensuring that all outputs align with the OHCHR's standards and objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Online Volunteer include drafting two communication products per week, which may consist of concept notes, key messages, human-interest articles, remarks, or opinion pieces intended for both internal and external publications. The volunteer will also support the development of communication strategies for ROSA events and campaigns, with an expected output of one strategy or campaign framework every two to three weeks, depending on operational needs. Additionally, the volunteer will review and sub-edit reports and policy briefs to ensure they adhere to the OHCHR style guide, with an estimated workload of two to four documents per month, each averaging 10-20 pages. Furthermore, the volunteer will review and sub-edit other communication documents, such as briefing notes and backgrounders, with an expectation of producing two short documents per week, averaging 3-5 pages each. This role is integral to maintaining the quality and consistency of the office's communications.

Proficiency in using various communication tools and platforms is essential, as is the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.

Educational Background:
A background in communications, public relations, international relations, human rights, or a related field is preferred for this position. Candidates should ideally be pursuing or have completed a degree in one of these areas, as this will provide the necessary foundation for understanding the complexities of human rights advocacy and communication within a UN context.

Experience:
While prior experience in communications or advocacy is beneficial, it is not strictly required for this volunteer position. However, candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in human rights issues and a willingness to learn and develop their skills in a professional setting. Experience in volunteer work or internships related to communications or human rights will be considered an asset.
