Duties and Responsibilities: The Director of Political Affairs will undertake a variety of duties, including:
Developing the overall political strategic vision and policies in coordination with senior leadership.
Advocating for the mission's views and ensuring coordinated support for political processes.
Guiding strategic engagement with national governments and civil society actors.
Identifying and analyzing political developments and emerging issues.
Preparing and reviewing reports for the Secretary-General and other UN bodies.
Proven ability to manage complex political situations and provide authoritative advice.
Demonstrated experience in political outreach and negotiation in an international context.
Strong leadership capabilities and the ability to foster teamwork and collaboration.
Commitment to gender equality and the incorporation of gender perspectives in all areas of work.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) in Political Science, International Relations, Social Science, Law, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: Candidates must have at least 15 years of progressively responsible experience in political affairs, diplomacy, conflict resolution, or a related field. A minimum of five years of management experience is required, along with extensive experience in political outreach, analysis, reporting, and negotiation in an international setting. Experience managing a large multi-functional team or office in a UN field operation or a comparable international organization in a conflict or post-conflict setting is essential. Familiarity with the Great Lakes Region and knowledge of conflict-related issues in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are also required.
Languages: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, candidates must demonstrate proficiency in both languages at UN Level III for reading, writing, listening, and speaking. This level indicates a high degree of fluency and the ability to communicate effectively in both languages.
