Job Overview: The position of Online Volunteer is crucial for the UNFPA Somalia Country Office as it prepares its 2026 Humanitarian Brochure. This brochure serves as a flagship communication tool that outlines the agency's humanitarian priorities, funding needs, and life-saving interventions in areas such as sexual and reproductive health (SRH), gender-based violence (GBV) prevention and response, and adolescent and youth programming. The volunteer will work under the supervision of the Humanitarian Programme Coordinator and collaborate closely with the Humanitarian Unit and Communications focal points. The primary expectation is to provide technical support in consolidating content, visual design, and layout to create a professional and compelling brochure that is ready for donor engagement. The role involves editing, proofreading, and ensuring that key humanitarian messages are accurately reflected, as well as designing the brochure layout in accordance with UNFPA branding guidelines.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Online Volunteer will be responsible for a variety of tasks aimed at developing the 2026 Humanitarian Brochure. These include:
Editing and proofreading text to ensure clarity, consistency, and coherence while adhering to UNFPA's corporate tone and terminology.
Ensuring that key humanitarian messages related to SRH, GBV, adolescents and youth, and protection are clearly articulated.
Designing the brochure layout in line with UNFPA branding guidelines, including colors, typography, and visual style.
Integrating text, charts, maps, photos, and infographics into a visually appealing and accessible format.
Proposing creative visual elements such as icons, section dividers, and data highlights to enhance readability and donor appeal.
Transforming key statistics and funding requirements into simple infographics and visual summaries.
Ensuring that figures and charts are accurate and aligned with the data provided by the Humanitarian Unit.
Supporting the organization and structuring of draft content provided by the Humanitarian Unit, which includes humanitarian context, needs overview, response strategy, results, funding requirements, and geographic coverage. The estimated workload involves reviewing approximately 5-7 documents, which may include scientific articles and studies, throughout the assignment duration.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the Online Volunteer position should possess strong research and writing skills, with a keen eye for detail. Experience in editing and proofreading is essential, particularly in the context of humanitarian or development communications. Familiarity with UNFPA's mission and terminology is highly desirable, as is an understanding of gender issues and inclusive communication. The ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and stakeholders is crucial, as the volunteer will be engaging with various units within UNFPA.
Educational Background: A background in communications, international relations, public health, gender studies, or a related field is preferred. Candidates should have a strong understanding of humanitarian issues and the ability to communicate effectively in written form. A degree or relevant coursework in these areas will be beneficial for applicants.
Experience: While specific years of experience are not mandated, candidates should have demonstrable experience in research, writing, and editing, particularly in a humanitarian or development context. Previous volunteer experience or internships with UN agencies or NGOs will be advantageous.
Languages: Proficiency in English is mandatory, as all communications and documentation will be conducted in this language. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly those relevant to the regions where UNFPA operates, would be considered a valuable asset, enhancing the volunteer's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders.
Additional Notes: This is a volunteer position, and as such, it may not offer financial compensation. However, it provides an excellent opportunity for professional development and networking within the United Nations system. The role is expected to be flexible in terms of hours, allowing volunteers to manage their time effectively while contributing to a significant humanitarian initiative. The duration of the assignment is not specified, but it will likely align with the timeline for the development of the 2026 Humanitarian Brochure.
