Job Overview:
The Fire Officer position at CERN involves a combination of operational command and managerial responsibilities within the Fire and Rescue Service. The role requires leading and coordinating emergency response operations while also contributing to planning, training, and continuous improvement of the service. The Fire Officer will be responsible for maintaining operational readiness, overseeing personnel and equipment, and ensuring effective interventions during firefighting and rescue incidents. This position is critical in a high-risk, international environment, where the Fire Officer must engage directly in daily activities at the fire station and lead training and drills to promote operational competence and teamwork. The role also includes participation in administrative management and stakeholder engagement to enhance safety and operational excellence.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Fire Officer will provide operational command during firefighting, rescue, and accident response incidents, coordinating effectively with both internal services and external emergency responders in France and Switzerland. Responsibilities include maintaining continuous operational readiness through oversight of personnel, vehicles, and equipment, ensuring safe and timely interventions. The Fire Officer will engage in daily fire station activities, lead training and drills, and contribute to operational planning and risk management. Additionally, the role involves supporting projects and innovation to enhance safety and operational excellence, as well as participating in post-incident follow-ups and continuous improvement actions.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess diplomas or certificates proving education and training as a Fire Officer or in related fields such as Emergency Management, Operations Management, Fire Science, or Civil Protection. A recognized Fire Officer certification from a public authority or accredited body is essential, along with formal training in incident command at the Bronze level or equivalent. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a strong understanding of fire station operations and readiness management, as well as the ability to lead teams and make sound decisions under pressure in a multicultural environment.

Educational Background:
A relevant educational background is required, including formal training as a Fire Officer or in related fields such as Emergency Management, Fire Science, or Public Safety. Candidates should have completed a recognized training program that equips them with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform effectively in the role of Fire Officer.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least five years of experience as a Fire Officer in an urban, industrial, or large organized fire service. Proven operational command capability and sound knowledge of incident command systems are essential. Experience in Fire Prevention, Fire Engineering, Hazardous Materials, and Emergency Medical response is desirable. The candidate should also have a strong interest in innovation and continuous improvement, with experience working with partner emergency services and stakeholders.

Languages:
Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language. This bilingual requirement is essential for effective communication in the diverse and international environment at CERN.

Additional Notes:
The position is a limited duration contract for five years, with the possibility of applying for an indefinite position subject to certain conditions. The working hours are 40 hours per week, and the role requires full onsite presence. The Fire Officer will participate in regular stand-by duty, including nights, Sundays, and official holidays, and must reside in the immediate vicinity of CERN's installations. The selected candidate must obtain medical clearance due to occupational health risks associated with the position. The job grade is 4-5, and the reference for this position is HSE-FRS-2026-3-LD.
