Job Overview:
The Security Coordination Officer plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of United Nations personnel and operations in South Sudan. This position involves the preparation and review of security plans and risk management documents, ensuring compliance with UNSMS security risk management strategies. The officer will assess local security conditions, provide guidance on security procedures, and maintain communication with security focal points and other agencies. The role requires active participation in security-related meetings and the ability to respond effectively to security incidents and crises. The officer will also be responsible for conducting security training and enhancing the security awareness of personnel, ensuring that the UN can operate safely and effectively in a challenging environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Security Coordination Officer will be responsible for a wide range of duties including: preparing and reviewing security plans and contingency plans; implementing security risk management strategies; providing written guidance on security components; participating in area security meetings; maintaining communication with security focal points; advising the Area Security Coordinator; assessing local security conditions; maintaining evacuation routes; ensuring fire safety measures are in place; conducting physical security inspections; ensuring emergency communication systems are operational; investigating security incidents; managing guard forces; responding to crises; coordinating Close Protection arrangements; collaborating with various stakeholders on security issues; and conducting security training for personnel.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess excellent knowledge of security management, particularly in post-conflict environments. They should demonstrate professionalism, efficiency, and the ability to manage multiple security units. Strong planning and organizational skills are essential, along with the ability to work collaboratively in a team setting. Candidates should also show a commitment to gender perspectives and the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in security management, business administration, political/social/military science, or international relations with a focus on security management is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with additional qualifying experience in military, police, or security management may be accepted. A diploma from a national police or military academy may also be considered in lieu of a first-level university degree, provided it is accompanied by relevant experience.

Experience:
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in military, police, or security management is required for candidates with an advanced university degree. For those with a first-level university degree, seven years of experience is necessary. At least two years of experience in security operations and one year in UN security operations in a conflict or post-conflict environment is also required. Experience with security risk management within the UN Security Management System or similar organizations is desirable.

Languages:
English is required for this position, with a minimum proficiency level of UN Level III in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. French is also a working language of the United Nations, but proficiency in French is not mandatory for this role.
