Job Posting Organization: The ITER Organization (IO) is a pioneering international collaboration focused on nuclear fusion, the process that powers the sun and stars. Established to develop fusion as a viable energy source, the organization operates in a multi-cultural environment and encourages diversity among its workforce. The ITER project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of fusion energy for peaceful purposes, contributing to a sustainable, non-carbon emitting global energy supply. The organization values collaboration, accountability, respect, and excellence, and is committed to fostering an inclusive workplace where all employees feel valued and respected, regardless of their background.
Job Overview: As an Equipment Qualification Engineer at the ITER Organization, you will play a crucial role in the ambitious fusion energy project. Your primary responsibilities will include coordinating the implementation of processes and technical instructions necessary for qualifying equipment to meet functional requirements and environmental conditions. This includes developing technical specifications and procedures for nuclear equipment and component qualification, particularly for Electrical and Instrumentation & Control equipment. You will also contribute to the drafting and review of qualification reports that are essential for the Safety Files required by the Nuclear Safety Authority. Your work will ensure that deliverables are produced on schedule and within budget, while adhering to a quality-assured environment that demands rigor and systematic approaches. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills and experience under the guidance of your discipline manager, contributing to the overall success of the ITER Project.
Duties and Responsibilities: Your key duties and responsibilities will include performing detailed reviews of nuclear equipment qualification documents, such as Identification Files, Qualification programmes/plans, Test specifications, and Test Reports. You will prepare technical review notes and utilize multi-system analyses to define loads for equipment qualification, ensuring that all associated requirements are met. Providing technical advice to the ITER Systems Teams on equipment qualification matters will be a significant part of your role. You will elaborate and refine qualification technical specifications and procedures for complex qualification conditions, and gather information to monitor and report on the progress of equipment qualification, ensuring that the List of Qualified Equipment remains current. Additionally, you will participate in controls, audits, or inspections related to equipment qualification and document your findings in formal reports. It is important to note that job descriptions may not be exhaustive, and you may be required to undertake other duties that align with your primary responsibilities.
Required Qualifications: To qualify for this position, you must have proven experience in equipment/component qualification for complex international projects, particularly in highly regulated environments such as the nuclear fission or fusion industry. You should possess solid knowledge of equipment failure mechanisms and the sensitivity of Electrical and Instrumentation & Control equipment to various environmental conditions, including temperature, radiation, humidity, and electromagnetic fields. Additionally, you should have experience in defining test sequences and supervising the execution of qualification tests, as well as the ability to understand, interpret, and justify analyses of complex components under extreme loading conditions. Collaboration skills are essential, as you will need to build partnerships and work collaboratively with others to achieve shared objectives. A results-oriented mindset and a commitment to continuous improvement are also important, as is familiarity with Quality Management Systems (QMS). Desirable qualifications include knowledge of nuclear and related standards concerning equipment qualification, as well as experience in fire qualification and decision-making skills that support organizational progress.
Educational Background: A Master’s degree or equivalent in electronic, automation, nuclear engineering, or a related discipline is essential for this position. While a Master’s degree is preferred, extensive professional experience involving similar work responsibilities or additional training certificates in relevant domains may be considered as substitutes for the required education. Certifications in RCC-E or IEEE standards concerning equipment qualification are also desirable.
Experience: The position requires a significant level of experience, specifically proven experience in equipment/component qualification for complex international projects, ideally within the nuclear fission or fusion industry. Candidates should have a strong background in testing and qualification processes, including defining test sequences and supervising qualification tests. Experience in analyzing complex components under extreme loading conditions is also essential, as well as familiarity with the regulatory environment surrounding nuclear safety and equipment qualification.
Languages: Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset, but English is the primary language of communication within the ITER Organization.
Additional Notes: The initial employment contract for this position is up to five years, with the possibility of extension. The selection process aims to fill the current vacancy while also creating a reserve list of candidates for future positions. This reserve list will remain valid for two years, with the potential for extension at the discretion of the Director-General. The ITER Organization is committed to diversity and inclusion in the workplace, encouraging applications from under-represented nations and women candidates. The organization adheres to its CARE Values, which emphasize collaboration, accountability, respect, and excellence, and fosters a fair and equitable environment across all areas of the project, including compensation and benefits.
