Job Overview:
The Consultant for Climate Change Reporting Training will work under the direct supervision of the Advocacy & Communication Specialist and collaborate closely with SECOMS. The primary responsibility of this role is to design, develop, and deliver a comprehensive technical training module focused on climate change reporting for media professionals. This position is particularly centered on climate-smart solutions as part of the C3SI initiative. The consultant will be expected to create a technical module on climate change reporting and facilitate two 1.5-day training workshops for media personnel, ensuring that the training is effective and impactful in enhancing the skills of participants in reporting on climate issues.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop a detailed technical module on Climate Change reporting tailored for media professionals.
  • Deliver two training workshops, each lasting 1.5 days, focusing on effective climate change reporting techniques.
  • Prepare an inception report and a comprehensive work plan outlining the training process.
  • Create a complete training package that includes a manual, presentations, and various tools to aid in the training process.
  • Facilitate the training workshops, ensuring active participation and engagement from attendees.
  • Compile a final training and evaluation report that assesses the effectiveness of the training and provides feedback for future improvements.
  • Offer sustainability and capacity-building recommendations to ensure the long-term impact of the training.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master's degree in Journalism, Communication, Environmental Studies, Climate Science, Development Studies, Public Policy, or a related field. Additionally, a minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in climate change, environmental journalism, or climate advocacy is required. The ideal candidate should have experience in designing and delivering training programs, developing technical training modules and materials, and possess strong expertise in climate change, climate adaptation, and resilience programming. Experience working with international organizations, UN agencies, NGOs, or development partners is essential. Strong analytical, writing, and editing abilities are also necessary for this role.

Educational Background:
A Master's degree in a relevant field such as Journalism, Communication, Environmental Studies, Climate Science, Development Studies, or Public Policy is required for this position. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of climate change and effectively communicating these issues to the media and the public.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in areas related to climate change, environmental journalism, or climate advocacy. Candidates should have a proven track record of designing and delivering training programs, as well as developing technical training modules and materials. Prior experience in Timor-Leste or the Asia-Pacific region is desirable, as it will provide valuable context for the training and understanding of local media dynamics.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary language of communication within UNICEF and for the training materials. Additionally, a working knowledge of Tetum and/or Portuguese is considered an asset, as it may enhance communication with local media professionals and stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
This consultancy position does not classify the individual as a staff member under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF's policies. Therefore, they will not be entitled to benefits such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage. The conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants are responsible for their tax liabilities and must ensure that their visa and health insurance are valid for the entire contract period. Selected candidates must confirm their fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a WHO-endorsed vaccine before starting the assignment, although this requirement does not apply to remote consultants.
