Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position within the Science-Policy Unit at UNEP's Latin America and the Caribbean Office in Panama City is designed to support the regional Environment under Review Subprogramme. The intern will assist in expanding the quality and scope of the program through research and administrative support. This role is crucial for providing timely, scientifically credible, and policy-relevant environmental analyses, data, and information that aid in decision-making and action planning for sustainable development. The intern will work closely with the Programme Officer and will be involved in various tasks that contribute to the overall objectives of the Science-Policy Unit, including monitoring and reporting on environmental trends, supporting data management, and facilitating communication with stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
  • Providing general support for the implementation of the biennial workplan of the Science-Policy Subprogramme.
  • Ensuring smooth coordination and regular communication with focal points of UNEP's Regional Environmental Information Network (REIN).
  • Following up with countries regarding the production of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) indicators where UNEP is the custodian agency.
  • Supporting the continuous updating and enrichment of the regional data platform maintained by UNEP.
  • Conducting secondary data research to assist in the development of concept notes, proposals, policy briefs, or activities.
  • Preparing communications pieces, technical briefing notes, news articles, draft reports, and publications as necessary.
  • Assisting in the organization of meetings, training sessions, and workshops.
  • Supporting other activities as requested by the staff members of the Unit.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be enrolled in a master's degree program or in the final academic year of a bachelor's degree program in fields such as Engineering, Economics, Statistics, Environmental Science, or other relevant areas. Alternatively, candidates who have recently graduated with a university degree in these fields are also eligible to apply. Strong analytical skills and a solid understanding of environmental data management, statistics, economics, and environmental management are essential. Excellent communication and writing skills in both Spanish and English are required, along with strong planning and organizational skills. Candidates should be computer literate in standard software applications, particularly MS Office, and should demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes enrollment in a master's degree program or being in the final year of a bachelor's degree program in relevant fields such as Engineering, Economics, Statistics, Environmental Science, or a related discipline. Recent graduates with degrees in these areas are also eligible to apply.
