Job Overview: The Communication and Documentation Technical Volunteer role is designed to provide expert advice and technical support to Civil Society Groups (CSGs) and Networks, enhancing their capacity in communication. The volunteer will leverage significant experience in development communications to assist the ACTIVE extension project in documenting key successes and lessons learned, as well as designing communication and outreach materials tailored to specific audiences. This position is integral to the global volunteer network, acting as a resource person who offers targeted and flexible technical support to country CSGs. The volunteer will engage in regular coaching and mentoring, providing remote technical assistance across countries. Although based in Zimbabwe, the volunteer will also extend support to VSO's communication and documentation efforts in Zambia and Eswatini, making this role crucial for fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing across borders.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide expert communication and documentation support to Civil Society Groups (CSGs) and Networks, enhancing their capacity in effective communication strategies.
Document key successes and lessons learned from the ACTIVE extension project, ensuring that valuable insights are captured and shared.
Design and develop communication and outreach materials that resonate with targeted audiences, promoting the objectives of the project.
Act as a resource person within the global volunteer network, offering technical support and guidance to CSGs in Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Eswatini.
Conduct regular coaching and mentoring sessions to empower local groups in their communication efforts.
Collaborate with other volunteers and stakeholders to ensure cohesive messaging and effective outreach strategies.
Participate in training sessions and workshops to enhance personal skills and knowledge in development communications.
Engage with local communities to understand their communication needs and tailor support accordingly.
Monitor and evaluate the impact of communication initiatives, providing feedback for continuous improvement. 1

Required Qualifications:
Proven experience in development communications, with a strong understanding of the challenges faced by Civil Society Groups (CSGs).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information in an accessible manner.
Strong interpersonal skills, capable of building relationships with diverse stakeholders.
Experience in designing communication materials, including reports, brochures, and digital content.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in various situations.
Commitment to VSO's mission and values, particularly in promoting equal opportunities and diversity.
Educational Background: A bachelor's degree in communications, social sciences, international development, or a related field is preferred. Additional certifications or training in communication strategies, project management, or community engagement would be advantageous.
Experience: A minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience in development communications or a related field is required. Experience working with Civil Society Groups (CSGs) or in a volunteer capacity is highly desirable. Familiarity with the socio-economic context of Zimbabwe and surrounding regions will be beneficial.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication within the organization. Proficiency in local languages spoken in Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Eswatini would be an asset, enhancing the ability to engage with local communities effectively.
Additional Notes: This volunteer position is full-time, with a contract duration that ends on March 31, 2026, but may be renewed based on funding confirmation. Volunteers will receive an allowance in local currency to cover reasonable living expenses, although it may not be sufficient for remittances. Accommodation will be basic, reflecting the organization's commitment to working with some of the poorest communities globally.
