Job Overview: The GHG Projections and Mitigation Expert will play a crucial role in supporting the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT) project in Zambia. This position involves close collaboration with the National ICAT team leadcoordinator and requires the expert to provide technical input for the completion of project deliverables. The expert will be responsible for developing and enhancing frameworks for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions projections, monitoring and evaluating climate policies, and ensuring compliance with the project’s workplan. The role also includes engaging with national authorities and stakeholders to ensure the technical quality and timely submission of all deliverables, contributing to the overall objectives of the ICAT project, and supporting Zambia's commitment to reducing GHG emissions as outlined in its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC).
Duties and Responsibilities: The GHG Projections and Mitigation Expert will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
Collaborating with the ICAT local team and national authorities to support the technical quality of deliverables.
Conducting stocktaking and capacity-building activities to enhance data collection processes for GHG emissions projections.
Identifying and analyzing selected policies and measures under key NDC sectors to estimate their GHG emissions reduction potential.
Developing and enhancing data management frameworks for GHG emissions projections.
Monitoring and tracking the implementation of NDC mitigation actions.
Engaging in stakeholder consultations to validate data gaps and enabling measures.
Preparing reports and documentation for various project deliverables, including inception reports, validation workshop reports, and final project reports.
Ensuring compliance with the project timeline and deliverables, with all outputs subject to review and approval by the UNEP CCC Project Coordinator.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in natural or social sciences. A Bachelor’s degree with a relevant combination of four years of additional experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree. The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 5 years of proven working experience in climate/environment protection and at least 10 years of experience with diverse GHG projections methodologies and tools. Additionally, candidates should have experience in identifying mitigation policies and measures, modeling GHG mitigation scenarios, and working with international development projects. Knowledge of the 2006 IPCC Guidelines and climate change policy processes is essential.
Educational Background: A Master’s degree in a relevant field such as environmental science, climate change, or a related discipline is preferred. A Bachelor’s degree may be accepted with sufficient relevant experience. Candidates should have a strong academic background that supports their understanding of climate science, environmental policy, and sustainable development.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 5 years of experience in climate/environment protection, with at least 10 years of experience in GHG projections methodologies and tools. Candidates should also have a proven track record of working with international development projects and engaging with national and local stakeholders related to climate mitigation. Experience in GHG emission accounting and preparation of national communications is an added advantage.
Languages: Fluency in English, both spoken and written, is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset but is not required.
Additional Notes: This is a part-time consultancy position expected to last for 9 months. The role involves collaboration with various stakeholders and may require international travel.
