  • The UNDS aims to enhance the effectiveness of the UN's operational activities for development at the country level. The Resident Coordinator (RC) is the highest-ranking representative of the UNDS in a country, responsible for leading UN country teams and ensuring accountability for the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework. The UNDS operates in various countries, focusing on sustainable development and the eradication of poverty, in alignment with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Job Overview:
The Resident Coordinator plays a pivotal role in representing the United Nations at the highest levels of government and fostering engagement with various stakeholders, including civil society, bilateral and multilateral partners, and the private sector. This position requires leading the UN country team in developing, monitoring, and reporting on the UN Cooperation Framework, ensuring that the UN's support aligns with national needs and priorities. The RC is responsible for coordinating UN system-wide support to the government, advocating for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and promoting the fundamental values of the UN Charter, including human rights and gender equality. The role also involves strategic partnership building, knowledge sharing, and facilitating access to resources for sustainable development initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Resident Coordinator's responsibilities include representing the UN at high-level state functions, leading the UN country team in the development and implementation of the UN Cooperation Framework, coordinating UN support to the government, and fostering partnerships with various stakeholders. The RC is tasked with conducting context and trend analysis, promoting the UN's values and principles, and engaging with diverse entities to support the 2030 Agenda. Additionally, the RC oversees country financing instruments, leads communication efforts to promote the UN's collective results, and ensures the security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security of UN personnel. The role also involves managing the Resident Coordinator's Office and providing strategic guidance to the UN country team, particularly in humanitarian contexts and conflict settings.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master's degree or equivalent postgraduate qualification in fields such as development studies, international relations, political science, economics, social sciences, human rights, or law. A first-level university degree with relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree. Over 15 years of substantive experience in leadership roles at the international level is required, including five years in development, human rights, or humanitarian work at the country level. Previous experience as a Resident Coordinator or in senior-level inter-agency coordination is essential. Candidates should demonstrate excellent judgment, strong diplomatic skills, and the ability to provide insightful analysis to senior officials.

Educational Background:
The educational requirement for this position includes a Master's degree or equivalent postgraduate qualification in relevant fields. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with relevant experience may be accepted. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of international development and the UN's operational framework.

Experience:
Candidates should have over 15 years of substantive experience in leadership roles at the international level, with at least five years of cumulative experience in development, human rights, rule of law, peace-building, or humanitarian work at the country level outside their own country. Previous experience as a Resident Coordinator is required, and senior-level inter-agency coordination experience may be considered in lieu of RC experience. Experience in managing multi-sectoral humanitarian programs and operations is desirable, as is experience engaging with women's and youth groups.

Languages:
English is the mandatory working language for this position, with a required proficiency level of UN Level III in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. French is also recognized as a working language of the United Nations, and proficiency in French may be considered an asset, although it is not mandatory for this position.

Additional Notes:
The start date for this position is February 2027, unless the incumbent is reassigned before that date. The position is classified as a C duty station, with a duration of assignment of four years.
