Job Overview: The National Consultant for Gender-Sensitive Conflict Analysis will play a crucial role in conducting a comprehensive analysis of the gendered dimensions of the ongoing conflict in Sudan. This position involves working closely with an international consultant to explore how gender norms and dynamics influence the conflict, the roles of women in peacebuilding, and the opportunities to strengthen the Women, Peace and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Security (WPS) agenda in the country. The consultant will engage in various stages of research, including literature reviews, data collection, and analysis, ensuring that gender perspectives are integrated into peace and recovery initiatives. The ultimate goal is to promote gender equality and women's meaningful participation in line with UNSCR 1325 and subsequent WPS resolutions, ensuring that peacebuilding efforts are inclusive and sustainable.
Duties and Responsibilities: The national consultant will be responsible for a range of tasks, including:
Contributing to the design of gender-sensitive methodology and research tools aligned with WPS principles.
Conducting a comprehensive desk review of relevant Arabic literature and summarizing key reports in English.
Designing questions for Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) while ensuring cultural and political sensitivity.
Defining the scope of primary data collection based on the security situation and ensuring diversity and intersectionality.
Training and supervising FGDs facilitators and KII interviewers on GSCA methodology and ethical standards.
Collating, cleaning, translating, and consolidating data from FGDs and KIIs into a primary data report.
Producing a mapping report of key actors informed by primary data, highlighting gendered roles and opportunities.
Drafting sections of the final Gender-Sensitive Conflict Analysis report and providing input to the international consultant's draft.
Participating in validation workshops and ensuring accurate documentation of discussions. 1
Reviewing the final report and providing comments from a local perspective.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced degree in gender studies, peace and conflict studies, international development, political science, or a related field. A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in gender assessments and research is required. Proven experience in facilitation and familiarity with FGDs techniques is essential. Knowledge of the Women, Peace and Security agenda and UNSCR 1325 is necessary, along with familiarity with the humanitarian context in Sudan and the specific challenges faced by women and girls in conflict settings. Strong writing and analytical skills are crucial, as is knowledge of the political context and key stakeholders. Experience working with UN agencies or other international organizations is considered an asset.
Educational Background: The position requires an advanced degree in a relevant field such as gender studies, peace and conflict studies, international development, or political science. This educational background is essential to understand the complexities of gender dynamics in conflict and post-conflict settings.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in gender assessments and research, demonstrating a strong understanding of gender issues in conflict situations. Experience in facilitation and conducting FGDs is also required, along with familiarity with the Women, Peace and Security agenda.
Languages: Fluency in Arabic and excellent English are mandatory for this position. Proficiency in both languages is essential for conducting research, facilitating discussions, and producing reports.
Additional Notes: The consultancy will be based in Sudan and is expected to last for a period of 30 working days. The consultant will work closely with an international consultant and will be required to adhere to ethical, security, and safeguarding protocols throughout the assignment. The payment schedule is divided into three parts: 30% upon completion of the literature review and inception support, 30% after primary data collection and analysis, and 40% upon final inputs and validation support.
