Job Overview:
The Analyst position is integral to supporting the Lead Analyst in the preparation of thematic reports and deliverables for the National Statistical Office (NSO) in Nepal. The role involves a variety of tasks aimed at ensuring that the reports meet the required standards and guidelines set by UN-Habitat and the NSO. The Analyst will participate in workshops, develop inception reports, and collaborate with experts and stakeholders to gather and analyze data. This position requires a strong understanding of data analysis, research methodologies, and the ability to communicate findings effectively. The Analyst will also be responsible for incorporating feedback from various stakeholders into the reports and ensuring that all deliverables are submitted on time. The expected duration of this consultancy is five months, during which the Analyst will work closely with the Lead Analyst and other team members to produce high-quality reports that contribute to the overall mission of UN-Habitat.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Analyst's duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Participating in orientation workshops organized by the NSO and relevant agencies to understand the requirements for the thematic report.
  • Developing and submitting an inception report to NSO/UN-Habitat, which includes an outline of the thematic report, dummy tables for census data, and a summary of additional data to be analyzed.
  • Conducting a thorough review of literature related to the thematic report topic, including theoretical and empirical studies, as well as relevant policies.
  • Collaborating with the Lead Analyst and other experts to mobilize resources and expertise for the thematic report preparation.
  • Participating in writing workshops to present progress and gather feedback.
  • Preparing and submitting the first draft of the thematic report by the specified deadline, incorporating comments and feedback from reviewers.
  • Finalizing the thematic report based on feedback from workshops and ensuring compliance with prescribed formats and guidelines.
  • Preparing annexes, including Excel files of tables and figures, and a PowerPoint presentation summarizing key findings for dissemination events.
  • Ensuring that all work produced is the property of the NSO and adhering to confidentiality agreements regarding unpublished data sets. 1
  • Engaging in discussions and presentations at dissemination events to share findings and implications of the thematic report.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (master’s or equivalent) in Applied Statistics, Urban and Regional Planning, Urban Studies, or relevant Social Science disciplines. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree. A minimum of two years of qualifying experience in data analysis, research, and writing on population and demographic issues is required. Experience working with official statistics producing agencies is essential, and prior involvement in preparing thematic reports is desirable. Familiarity with analyzing cross-dimension themes such as Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) and Poverty using major national data sets is also preferred. Previous experience working with the United Nations is an advantage.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree (master’s or equivalent) in a relevant field such as Applied Statistics, Urban and Regional Planning, Urban Studies, or Social Sciences. Candidates with a first-level university degree and additional qualifying experience may also be considered. The emphasis is on having a strong foundation in data analysis and research methodologies relevant to urban and demographic studies.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of two years of qualifying experience in data analysis, research, and writing, particularly in the context of population and demographic issues. Candidates should have experience working with official statistics producing agencies and should be familiar with the processes involved in preparing thematic reports. Experience in analyzing complex themes such as GESI and Poverty using national data sets is desirable, as is previous work experience with the United Nations or similar international organizations.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this position, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Knowledge of the Nepali language is considered desirable, as it may facilitate communication and collaboration with local stakeholders and enhance the quality of the thematic report.

Additional Notes:
The consultancy is expected to last for five months, during which the Analyst will work full-time on the project. The position is not associated with any fees at any stage of the recruitment process, as the United Nations does not charge applicants for applications, interviews, or training.
