Job Overview:
The Research Officer position within the IMF's Monetary and Capital Markets Department (MCM) is a pivotal role that involves working in the Global Markets Analysis Division (GA). This division is tasked with monitoring financial markets and providing insights to member countries and senior management regarding macrofinancial developments. The role requires the candidate to engage in in-depth analytical projects that contribute to the IMF’s flagship Global Financial Stability Report (GFSR) and other research outputs. The successful candidate will utilize data analytics, conduct investor outreach, and gather market intelligence to support the division's objectives. The position demands a strong analytical mindset, technical skills in data processing, and the ability to interpret complex financial data to inform decision-making processes.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Research Officer will collaborate with other research officers, economists, and financial sector experts within MCM to support various technical, analytical, and operational projects. Key responsibilities include:
  • Assisting in research projects and the production of the GFSR, which involves processing data, coding, and implementing econometric and statistical procedures.
  • Developing analytical tools, creating charts, and interpreting results to provide insights into financial markets.
  • Leading initiatives to enhance and maintain the division's infrastructure by working closely with the Information and Technology Department (ITD) to automate asset pricing models, yield curve models, and market monitoring dashboards.
  • Implementing the GA’s strategic framework for data and analytics infrastructure.
  • Taking a lead role in the application of artificial intelligence to monitor financial markets and derive economic analysis.
  • Engaging in other projects and tasks as required by the division.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree or equivalent in economics, mathematics, statistics, data science, or information technology. Alternatively, a university degree supplemented by a minimum of six years of relevant professional experience is acceptable. Additionally, candidates should have at least three years of relevant work experience in financial, market, or economic analysis, with experience in database management and automation being a significant advantage. A strong understanding of advanced statistics or econometrics is essential, along with proficiency in coding languages such as Python or Matlab. Familiarity with financial databases and information sources, including Bloomberg, Haver Analytics, and WRDS, is also required. Candidates should demonstrate a strong work ethic, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines while working independently.

Educational Background:
The position requires an advanced university degree in a relevant field such as economics, mathematics, statistics, data science, or information technology. Candidates with a university degree supplemented by significant professional experience will also be considered. The educational background should provide a solid foundation in quantitative analysis and data interpretation, which are critical for the role.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have a minimum of six years of relevant professional experience, with at least three years specifically in financial, market, or economic analysis. Experience in database management and automation is highly advantageous, as it aligns with the technical requirements of the position. The candidate should be adept at working with large and complex datasets and applying advanced statistical techniques to derive meaningful insights.

Languages:
Proficiency in English is mandatory, as it is the working language of the IMF. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset, particularly if it enhances the candidate's ability to collaborate with diverse teams and stakeholders across the organization.

Additional Notes:
The position is classified under the A09, A10, A11 levels within the IMF. Selected candidates who are regular staff members will maintain their open-ended status, while contractual employees will be offered a Term staff appointment. Current term staff may receive an extension if their current term has not already been extended.
