Job Overview:
The Epidemiology and Surveillance Officer will play a crucial role in providing technical support and managing staff involved in the STRIDES Zambia project. This position requires the officer to monitor and enhance epidemiological surveillance activities, ensuring effective implementation of strategies for infectious disease detection. The officer will work closely with various ministries and health institutions in Zambia, contributing to the design and execution of surveillance strategies. The role demands leadership in planning and executing activities aimed at improving the quality of epidemiological interventions, as well as participating in technical meetings to provide thought leadership at the country level. The officer will also be responsible for evaluating program effectiveness and providing technical assessment reports, ensuring that the project aligns with national health objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties of the Epidemiology and Surveillance Officer include providing overall technical direction on epidemiological surveillance, supporting the design and implementation of surveillance systems, and coordinating with global teams to enhance surveillance efforts. The officer will conduct analyses to identify areas for improvement, prepare training materials, and deliver training to various stakeholders. Responsibilities also include monitoring project protocols, developing technical briefs and reports, and assisting in the preparation of donor reports. The officer will ensure that project activities align with work plans and provide technical support for the development of tools and materials necessary for project success. Additionally, the officer will be involved in client and funder support, operations management, and project/program reporting, ensuring that all activities are documented and communicated effectively.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong background in epidemiology and public health, with a focus on infectious disease control. Proficiency in database management and online search tools is essential. The officer should demonstrate sensitivity to cultural diversity and possess excellent communication skills. A solid understanding of technical support for research studies and the ability to analyze and interpret data are crucial. The candidate should also have experience in developing scopes of work and deliverables for partners and consultants, as well as the ability to solve problems and implement corrective actions as needed.

Educational Background:
A Bachelor's degree or its international equivalent in epidemiology, public health, or a related field is required for this position. This educational background provides the foundational knowledge necessary for understanding the complexities of public health and epidemiological practices.

Experience:
Typically, candidates should have at least 2+ years of relevant experience in both national and international contexts, specifically in epidemiology and public health programs. Experience in applying WHO International Health Regulations and outbreak response is highly valued. The officer should also have a demonstrated ability to implement infectious disease surveillance methodologies and analyze epidemiological data effectively.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as the officer must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in this language. Additional language skills may be beneficial but are not specified as mandatory.

Additional Notes:
This position does not involve supervisory responsibilities but requires the officer to report to an Associate Director or Director. The role is expected to involve travel, estimated at 10% to 25%.
