Job Overview:
The position of UN Volunteer in GIS and Drone Operations is integral to the Research, Assessment, and Monitoring (RAM) unit of WFP Armenia. The role involves supporting the collection, processing, and management of geospatial data for various WFP projects. The volunteer will operate drones to capture high-resolution images of project sites, which include irrigation systems, agricultural fields, and infrastructure. This position is designed for individuals who are passionate about using technology to enhance data collection and analysis, thereby contributing to the effective implementation of WFP's Country Strategic Plan (CSP) for 2026-203
  • The volunteer will also assist in the development and maintenance of GIS databases, ensuring data quality and accuracy, and will support the production of maps and spatial analyses that are essential for monitoring and decision-making processes.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The UN Volunteer will undertake a variety of tasks under the supervision of the Head of the RAM Unit. Key responsibilities include:
  • Supporting the collection, processing, and management of geospatial data for WFP Armenia projects.
  • Operating drones to capture high-resolution images of project sites, including irrigation systems, agricultural fields, and infrastructure.
  • Assisting in the development and maintenance of GIS databases, ensuring data quality and accuracy.
  • Producing maps, spatial analyses, and visualizations to support targeting, monitoring, reporting, and decision-making.
  • Assisting in training staff and partners on the use of GIS and drone technologies for project monitoring.
  • Supporting the development of standard operating procedures for drone operations and geospatial data management.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates should possess a strong understanding of GIS technologies and drone operations. Familiarity with data management and analysis is essential. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to the mission of WFP and possess the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively are also required. Additionally, candidates should exhibit adaptability and flexibility in a dynamic work environment.

Educational Background:
A degree in Geography, Environmental Science, Computer Science, or a related field is required. Candidates with specialized training in GIS and remote sensing will be given preference. Relevant certifications in drone operation and data analysis will also be advantageous.

Experience:
The position requires prior experience in GIS and drone operations, ideally in a humanitarian or development context. Candidates should have a proven track record of working with geospatial data and possess skills in data visualization and analysis. Experience in training others on technical tools and methodologies is also beneficial.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the working language of WFP. Knowledge of Armenian is an asset, as it will facilitate communication with local stakeholders. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered a plus, depending on the specific needs of the projects.
