Job Overview: The Research Consultant will play a crucial role in advancing the objectives of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) by developing a comprehensive methodology for updating a study on women's representation and experiences in the space sector. This position requires the consultant to work independently while also collaborating with various stakeholders to gather and analyze data. The consultant will be responsible for creating a digital board that tracks gender equality metrics in the space sector, ensuring that the information is accessible and user-friendly. The consultant's work will contribute to the broader goals of promoting gender equality and supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG5). The expected duration of the consultancy is from January 12, 2026, to August 7, 2026, and the work will be home-based, allowing for flexibility in conducting research and analysis.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant will be tasked with several key responsibilities, including:
Developing a precise and comprehensive methodology for updating the study on women's representation in the space sector, incorporating lessons learned from previous research phases.
Updating the quantitative and qualitative database according to the newly established methodology, aiming to increase participation from various entities and countries.
Consolidating the study's results into a digital board that is accessible to all stakeholders, allowing for the tracking of results over time. This digital board will be hosted on the UNOOSA website and will utilize platforms such as Power BI or Tableau for data visualization.
Preparing a comprehensive action plan that outlines the methodology and updates the dataset, including the creation of updated questionnaires for stakeholders.
Producing a short results report summarizing the updated quantitative and qualitative data collected.
Drafting an outline for a methodology booklet that captures lessons learned from the research phases and includes specific metrics for ongoing evaluation.
Presenting the study findings in two presentations: one for the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) and a final presentation for a broader audience.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in fields such as economics, political science, international relations, social sciences, or a related discipline. Alternatively, a first-level university degree in similar fields combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted. Applicants should have at least five years of experience in implementing research, demonstrating excellent research skills, verbal and written communication abilities, and report writing proficiency. The ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team is essential. Experience in conducting and publishing both quantitative and qualitative research focused on gender equality in the space sector is required, along with familiarity with the space sector and experience in international relations or with international organizations being desirable.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in relevant fields such as economics, political science, international relations, or social sciences. Candidates with a first-level university degree in similar fields may be considered if they have two additional years of qualifying experience. This educational foundation is crucial for understanding the complexities of gender issues within the space sector and for developing effective methodologies for research.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of five years of working experience in the field of implementing research. This experience should include a strong background in both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, particularly in the context of gender equality in the space sector. Candidates should demonstrate a proven track record of conducting research, analyzing data, and publishing findings. Experience working in international relations or for an international organization is also desirable, as it will provide valuable insights into the global context of the research.
Languages: Fluency in oral and written English is mandatory for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French is also required, as it is another working language of the UN. Additionally, proficiency in another United Nations official language would be considered an advantage, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate effectively in a multilingual environment.
