Job Overview: The Deputy ProjectDirector for the Moyens de Subsistance Transformés (MOST) project plays a crucial role in supporting the Senior Technical Manager, who serves as the Project Director. This position involves managing and directing a two-year cross-border artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) livelihoods and stabilization project, which is part of a larger initiative funded by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The Deputy Project Director will lead the implementation of project activities in Mali, supervise part-time staff, and manage a local implementing partner. The role requires providing technical coaching and monitoring for local partners in Guinea and Senegal, organizing trainings and workshops, and conducting field trips to engage stakeholders and collect data. The position demands a strong focus on ASGM governance, livelihood strengthening, and responsible mining practices, including mercury-free gold mining and occupational health and safety.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Deputy Project Director will be responsible for leading the implementation of MOST project activities in Mali and providing technical support for project activities in Guinea and Senegal. This includes monitoring the institutional, political, commercial, and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security context of Mali’s gold mining sector, preparing regular reports for the Project Director, and managing the project budget and expenses. The Deputy Project Director will develop and maintain relationships with project stakeholders, including government counterparts and civil society organizations, and will lead the collection and reporting of monitoring and evaluation data. Additionally, the role involves ensuring compliance with national laws and regulations, improving IT skills for digital systems, and participating in internal and external communications to share project progress and engage international partners.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree and have at least 7 years of relevant experience, including 3 years in a management role. A minimum of 5 years of work experience with stakeholders in Mali’s ASGM sector is required, along with prior relationships with the Ministry of Mines and ASGM stakeholders in specific regions. Strong interpersonal skills, a team-player mentality, and a passion for engaging rural communities are essential. Candidates must also be Malian citizens and demonstrate fluency in French, both oral and written, as well as proficiency in at least one local language.
Educational Background: The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field. Candidates with equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be considered. The educational background should ideally include studies related to development, social sciences, or a field pertinent to the ASGM sector.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, with at least 3 years in a management capacity. Experience working directly with stakeholders in Mali’s ASGM sector is crucial, as is familiarity with the local context and relationships with government and community partners.
