Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research organization established to probe the fundamental structure of the universe. Founded in 1954, CERN has grown to employ thousands of scientists, engineers, and support staff from over 100 countries. It operates the world's largest particle physics laboratory, where groundbreaking research is conducted using complex scientific instruments to study fundamental particles and their interactions. CERN's mission is to advance knowledge and foster innovation in the field of particle physics, contributing to our understanding of the universe and the fundamental laws of nature.
Job Overview: The Mechanical Engineer position within CERN's Cryogenics Group offers a unique opportunity to work in one of the most challenging and exciting environments in the world. The role involves designing and overseeing the construction of cryogenic equipment essential for the operation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and its major upgrade, the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). As part of the Technology Department, the engineer will collaborate with external suppliers and internal partners to ensure the successful installation and operation of complex cryogenic systems. This position requires a strong focus on project management, quality assurance, and technical documentation, making it critical for the ongoing success of CERN's research initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
Designing cryogenic equipment and overseeing its construction in collaboration with external suppliers and internal partners.
Managing technical documentation associated with cryogenic systems.
Organizing the installation of complex cryogenic equipment and preparing quality controls and documentation.
Contributing to project management activities, ensuring that all aspects of the project are executed efficiently and effectively.
Managing components procurement and production follow-up to ensure timely delivery and adherence to specifications.
Collaborating with various teams and services both within and outside the organization to facilitate project success.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's degree or PhD in mechanical engineering or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience. A strong background in mechanical design, particularly in industrial equipment, is essential. Familiarity with pressure equipment and experience in managing industrial projects, including planning and coordinating installation and commissioning activities, is highly desirable. Knowledge of complex industrial processes, especially in cryogenics or vacuum technologies, will be considered an asset.
Educational Background: The position requires a Master's degree or PhD in mechanical engineering or a closely related field. Candidates with equivalent relevant experience may also be considered. A solid foundation in mechanical design principles and practices is crucial for success in this role.
Experience: Demonstrated experience in the mechanical design of industrial equipment is required, with a preference for candidates who have worked with pressure equipment. Experience in managing industrial projects, including planning, coordination of installation and commissioning activities, and interaction with suppliers and contractors, is essential. Familiarity with complex industrial processes, particularly in cryogenics or vacuum technologies, is a significant advantage.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, with a commitment to learn French being a valuable asset. Effective communication skills are essential for collaboration within the diverse teams at CERN.
Additional Notes: This position is a limited duration contract for 4 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The role requires a commitment to work 40 hours per week, including potential work in radiation areas, underground installations, and during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as needed.
