Job Overview:
This consultancy position is focused on providing specialized training in bird identification, counting, and monitoring for the Ministry of Land Policy and Forest Management's Forestry Service, specifically within the Nature Conservation Division. The training is aimed at enhancing the skills and knowledge of personnel involved in bird conservation efforts, which are critical for biodiversity and ecosystem health. The consultant will be expected to develop a comprehensive training program that includes theoretical and practical components, ensuring that participants gain hands-on experience in bird monitoring techniques. The assignment is scheduled to take place from January to April 2026, and the consultant will need to prepare training materials, conduct workshops, and evaluate the effectiveness of the training provided. This role is crucial for strengthening the capacity of local authorities in managing and conserving bird populations in Suriname.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will be responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:
  • Develop a detailed training curriculum that covers bird identification, counting methods, and monitoring techniques tailored to the needs of the Ministry of Land Policy and Forest Management.
  • Conduct training sessions that include both theoretical lectures and practical field exercises to ensure comprehensive learning.
  • Create training materials, including manuals, presentations, and handouts, that participants can refer to during and after the training.
  • Collaborate with local experts and stakeholders to ensure the training is relevant and effective.
  • Evaluate the training program's effectiveness through feedback from participants and make necessary adjustments to improve future training sessions.
  • Provide ongoing support and guidance to participants as they implement the skills learned in their work.
  • Prepare a final report summarizing the training activities, participant feedback, and recommendations for future training initiatives.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for this consultancy position should possess the following qualifications:
  • A strong background in ornithology, ecology, or a related field, with a focus on bird conservation.
  • Proven experience in conducting training programs, particularly in the areas of wildlife monitoring and conservation.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage and motivate participants.
  • Familiarity with the local bird species and conservation issues in Suriname is highly desirable.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Proficiency in using various bird monitoring techniques and tools, including field equipment for bird counting and identification.

Educational Background:
A minimum of a Master's degree in ornithology, ecology, environmental science, or a related field is required for this consultancy position. Candidates with a PhD in a relevant discipline will be given preference. Additional certifications in training or education methodologies will be considered an asset.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least 5 years of professional experience in bird conservation, wildlife monitoring, or related fields. Experience working with governmental or non-governmental organizations in a training capacity is highly desirable. Familiarity with the specific challenges and opportunities in Suriname's biodiversity conservation efforts will be an advantage.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as all training materials and sessions will be conducted in English. Knowledge of Dutch or local languages spoken in Suriname would be considered a valuable asset, as it may facilitate better communication with local stakeholders and participants.
