Job Overview:
The Research Analysis Intern position is a full-time, in-person internship located at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, specifically within the Northeast Asia and the Pacific Team of the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA). This internship is designed to provide hands-on experience in the field of international relations and peacebuilding efforts, particularly focusing on the Asia and Pacific regions. The intern will work closely with the Team Leader and contribute to various projects and initiatives aimed at enhancing the UN's role in conflict prevention and resolution. The expected duration of the internship is six months, with a desired start date of January 5, 2026, or sooner. The intern will engage in research, report preparation, and strategic communication development, gaining valuable insights into the workings of the UN and the complexities of international diplomacy.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a range of tasks that support the Northeast Asia and Pacific Team's objectives. These duties include:
  • Conducting research on issues related to UN peacebuilding efforts in Asia and the Pacific, with a particular focus on the Pacific region.
  • Assisting in the preparation of reports, concept papers, policy documents, talking points, articles, and other materials relevant to the team's work.
  • Supporting the development of strategic communications, presentations, and visualizations to effectively convey the team's messages.
  • Attending conferences and meetings, taking detailed notes, and summarizing discussions for future reference.
  • Assisting in the organization and servicing of conferences and meetings, ensuring all logistical aspects are managed efficiently.
  • Contributing to data collection and information management efforts to support ongoing projects.
  • Assisting with project management development, helping to track progress and outcomes of various initiatives.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for the internship, applicants must meet specific criteria set by the United Nations Internship Programme. Candidates must be either enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent) or be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). While professional work experience is not required, applicants should have a field of study closely related to the internship, such as international relations, international development, peacebuilding, or conflict prevention. A demonstrated interest in and knowledge of the Northeast Asia and the Pacific region is also desirable, as it will enhance the intern's contributions to the team's work.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes either enrollment in or completion of a graduate program or the final year of a bachelor's degree program. Candidates should ideally have coursework or academic training in areas related to international relations, peacebuilding, conflict prevention, or similar fields. This academic foundation will provide the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively engage with the team's projects and responsibilities.

Experience:
While prior professional work experience is not mandatory for this internship, candidates are expected to have relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the internship's focus. This could include research projects, volunteer work, or academic studies related to international relations, peacebuilding, or conflict resolution. The internship is designed for individuals who are eager to learn and contribute to the UN's mission without the prerequisite of extensive professional experience.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is a requirement for this internship, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of an additional UN language, such as French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an asset and may enhance the candidate's application.
