Job Overview:

Interns will work under the supervision of designated staff members within various teams or projects corresponding to the workstream they applied for. The internship is unpaid and requires a full-time commitment of 40 hours per week, with a duration of up to 6 months. Interns will have the opportunity to engage in various workstreams, including Learning & Development, Internship Programme/Administration, Communication, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, and Employer Branding & Outreach. Each workstream has specific responsibilities and tasks that interns will be expected to undertake, providing them with a comprehensive understanding of HR functions within the UN framework.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be involved in a range of duties depending on the workstream they are assigned to. For the Learning & Development workstream, responsibilities include conducting independent projects, preparing training-related statistics, supporting training workshops, and assisting with the UN Language Programme. In the Internship Programme/Administration workstream, interns will support the onboarding process, liaise with internship supervisors, assist with internship agreements, and maintain tracking tools. The Communication workstream involves contributing to the HRMS monthly newsletter, managing website content, and preparing email communications. The Diversity, Equity & Inclusion workstream focuses on supporting initiatives related to gender equality and diversity, while the Employer Branding & Outreach workstream includes planning social media campaigns, drafting communications, and assisting with outreach initiatives. Overall, interns will perform various administrative tasks and provide general support to their respective teams as needed.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for the internship, applicants must meet specific criteria, including being enrolled in or having recently completed a graduate school program or the final academic year of a first university degree program. Official written proof from the university supporting this requirement must be attached to the application. Additionally, applicants should be computer literate in standard software applications, have a keen interest in the work of the United Nations, and demonstrate the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Studies in fields such as Business Administration, Human Resources, Education, Communications, Social Sciences, or Humanities are desirable, but no prior work experience is required.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or they must have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. program. Proof of enrollment or graduation must be provided as part of the application process. This educational background ensures that interns have the necessary theoretical knowledge to contribute effectively to the UN's work.

Experience:
No prior working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. However, any relevant training, education, or advanced coursework that can benefit the United Nations during the internship is encouraged. This allows candidates from various educational backgrounds to apply and gain valuable experience in the field of human resources.

Languages:
Fluency in English, both oral and written, is required for the internship position. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is considered an advantage, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. This requirement ensures that interns can effectively communicate within the diverse environment of the UN.

Additional Notes:
The internships are unpaid, and candidates are responsible for covering their travel costs, including visa, accommodation, health insurance, and other living expenses. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of Austria may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization. The application process requires a completed online application, including a Motivation Statement, Candidate Profile, and proof of enrollment or graduation. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. The Motivation Statement must detail the applicant's degree program, graduation date, and interest in the internship. Due to the high volume of applications, only successful candidates will be contacted. The United Nations does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process.
