Job Overview:
The Economic Affairs Officer position is located within the Regional Integration Section of the Regional Integration and Trade Division (RITD) at ECA. The officer will report to the Regional Integration Chief of Section and will be responsible for conducting economic and sector analysis, providing intergovernmental support, and contributing to technical cooperation initiatives. The role involves developing socio-economic databases, interpreting econometric models, monitoring economic developments, and drafting reports on regional integration. The officer will also engage with intergovernmental bodies, prepare inputs for meetings, and support collaborative work with regional economic communities. This position requires a strong understanding of economic development and integration issues, as well as the ability to conduct independent research and analysis.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Economic Affairs Officer will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including:
  • Developing socio-economic databases and qualitative information for various assignments.
  • Interpreting and adapting econometric models to analyze trends and policy effects.
  • Monitoring economic developments and regional integration trends in Africa.
  • Conducting research on economic development issues and contributing to reports like the ARIA and ASRII.
  • Drafting technical papers and analytical studies on economic development and structural transformation.
  • Attending meetings to gather information and engage with other institutions.
  • Formulating proposals for development strategies and policies.
  • Assisting in organizing expert group meetings and seminars.
  • Providing substantive support to intergovernmental bodies on economic issues. 1

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctorate) in economics or related fields. A first-level degree (Bachelor’s) with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Successful completion of programs in data analytics, business analytics, or data science is advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of economic theories and concepts, as well as the ability to conduct independent research and analyze data effectively.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctorate) in economics or related fields is required for this position. Alternatively, a first-level degree (Bachelor’s) in economics or a related field, combined with two additional years of relevant work experience, may be accepted. Completion of degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics, or data science is considered an advantage.

Experience:
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, or related areas is required. Experience in Africa or on African-related issues is desirable. Candidates should have the ability to apply economic theories in various sectors and conduct independent research on economic topics. Experience in data analytics or related fields is also desirable, with at least one year of relevant experience preferred.

Languages:
The working languages of the United Nations Secretariat are English and French. For this position, proficiency in either English or French is required. Candidates should refer to the UN Language Framework for the minimum required level of proficiency in these languages.
