Job Overview:
The Medical Assistant Intern position is designed for students and recent graduates who have a keen interest in migration health and related fields. The intern will work under the supervision of the Chief Migration Health Officer and the Senior Medical and Information Management Assistant at the Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC) in Manila, Philippines. The primary focus of this internship is to provide support in various administrative and operational tasks related to health assessments for migrants. Interns will gain valuable experience in a multicultural environment and will be exposed to the workings of an international organization, enhancing their understanding of migration health issues and the role of IOM in addressing them. The internship aims to develop the intern's skills in data management, communication, and client interaction, while also providing insights into the broader context of migration and health.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Medical Assistant Intern will be responsible for a range of duties within the MHAC, including but not limited to:
  • Registering migrants in the IOM database and other medical web applications.
  • Scheduling and confirming medical appointments, as well as receiving and communicating messages for medical staff and beneficiaries through program-specific mailboxes and calls.
  • Maintaining daily statistics related to health assessments and updating records accordingly.
  • Performing data processing activities for the United Kingdom TB Screening (UKTB) and Japan Pre-entry Tuberculosis Screening (JPETS), which includes explaining the registration process to applicants, checking their identity, entering biodata into the appropriate platform, taking photos, and printing necessary medical forms and consent documents.
  • Assisting with other duties as assigned by supervisors, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the MHAC operations.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must meet the following qualifications to be considered for the Medical Assistant Intern position:
  • Must be between 20 and 36 years old.
  • Should have less than two years of relevant working experience.
  • Must have a specific interest in migration health or related fields, as demonstrated through academic studies or previous internships.
  • Must be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level) or have graduated within the last 12 months.
  • A certificate in data entry is considered an advantage.
  • Typing speed of at least 60 words per minute is required.
  • High computer literacy in Windows and MS Office is mandatory.

Educational Background:
The ideal candidate for the Medical Assistant Intern position should be completing or have completed a degree in Communications, Administration, or related fields from an accredited academic institution. This educational background will provide the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively perform the duties associated with the internship, particularly in data management and communication.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have less than two years of relevant working experience. This could include internships, volunteer work, or part-time positions in fields related to health, administration, or migration. The experience should demonstrate the candidate's ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle administrative tasks efficiently.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Tagalog is required for this position, as these are the primary languages used in the workplace. IOM's official languages also include French and Spanish, and proficiency in these languages would be considered an asset during the selection process. Candidates may be evaluated on their language skills through written and/or oral assessments.

Additional Notes:
The internship is subject to funding confirmation, and any offer made to the candidate will depend on this condition. The appointment will also require certification of the candidate's medical fitness for the role, as well as verification of residency, visa, and other necessary authorizations by the concerned government, where applicable. Interns may receive a small monthly stipend to help offset costs, but those who are already receiving financial remuneration or credits for coursework from their university or sponsoring body will not be eligible for this stipend. IOM provides coverage for interns against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP) at no cost, but does not offer evacuation or medical insurance for non-occupational accidents or illnesses. Interns are responsible for their own medical insurance for such cases and must provide proof of coverage before starting work. IOM maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding conduct that contradicts the organization's aims and objectives, including discrimination and harassment. The organization does not charge any fees during the recruitment process and only accepts applications submitted through the IOM online recruitment system.
