Job Overview:
As a Computer Engineer in the Database and Analytics Group at CERN, you will play a crucial role in the Analytics, Streaming and Monitoring section. This section is responsible for providing essential messaging, data streaming, monitoring platforms, and frontend analytics services to various CERN communities. Your primary functions will include contributing to the development and evolution of the monitoring service, managing monitoring applications, and overseeing the monitoring infrastructure. You will ensure the performance and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security of these services while providing user support for monitoring, particularly for the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments. Additionally, you will offer consultancy and assistance to end users in developing data pipelines and monitoring use-cases, and contribute to the operations of other services within the section, such as interactive analytics infrastructure and messaging services.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Contribute to the development and evolution of the monitoring service, ensuring it meets the needs of various CERN communities.
  • Manage monitoring services and applications, including metrics, logging, alerting, and visualization tools.
  • Oversee the monitoring infrastructure, including the deployment of software packages and operation of the service, ensuring optimal performance and security.
  • Provide user support on monitoring services, particularly for WLCG and LHC experiments.
  • Offer consultancy, assistance, and advice to end users developing data pipelines and monitoring use-cases.
  • Contribute to the operations of other services in the section, such as interactive analytics infrastructure (SWAN, Jupyter Notebooks) and Messaging and Data Streaming Services.
  • Analyze performance metrics to scale the monitoring infrastructure to accommodate increasing workloads.
  • Engage in DevOps operations, including configuration management and tool development in Agile environments and cloud-native deployments.
  • Operate large-scale production Kubernetes environments and manage related components and web interfaces.

Required Qualifications:
  • A Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Proven experience in software development, particularly using Java or Python.
  • Familiarity with established open-source technologies such as OpenTelemetry, Kafka, Spark, OpenSearch, and Grafana.
  • Experience in DevOps operations, including Linux systems and configuration management tools like Ansible or Puppet.
  • Knowledge of Kubernetes environments and technical troubleshooting skills related to Kubernetes components and data analysis engines.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a Master's degree or equivalent in Computer Science or a related field. This educational background should provide a solid foundation in software engineering principles, data analysis, and system architecture, which are essential for the role.

Experience:
Candidates should have proven experience in software development, particularly with Java or Python. Experience in managing and operating large-scale production environments, especially with Kubernetes, is highly desirable. Familiarity with Agile development practices and cloud-native deployments will also be beneficial.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, and candidates should demonstrate a commitment to learning French, which is considered an asset for the position.

Additional Notes:
This position is a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of applying for an indefinite position subject to certain conditions. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the job offers hybrid flexibility. The role may require work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays, as well as stand-by duty when necessary. The job grade for this position is 6-7, and it falls under the field of Software Engineering and IT.
