Job Overview:
The Principal Environmental and Social Specialist will play a crucial role in supporting the Environmental and Sustainability Department’s Policy and Energy teams, with a specific focus on projects in Sub-Saharan Africa. This position requires a deep understanding of environmental and social aspects of projects, particularly in the context of developing countries. The Principal will collaborate with various stakeholders, including Associate Directors and Heads of Sector, to ensure compliance with the Bank’s Environmental and Social Policy. The role involves contributing specialist input to the appraisal and monitoring of a diverse range of projects, including those that are complex and high-risk. The Principal will also engage in oversight and verification of the Bank's environmental and social commitments, ensuring that projects align with international standards and best practices.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Principal will be responsible for providing specialist input to various projects and initiatives, particularly those that are complex or high-risk. This includes managing delivery of specific sub-projects, conducting assessments of environmental and social compliance, and identifying risks and opportunities related to climate and nature. The Principal will coordinate project teams, conduct analytical reviews, develop methodologies, and manage data. They will also represent the ESD at internal and external meetings, support capacity-building initiatives, and contribute to the continuous improvement of internal processes. Additionally, the Principal will prepare reports on the Bank’s environmental and social performance and ensure that all activities align with the Bank’s Behavioural Competencies and Corporate Behaviours.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a degree in environmental and/or social sciences, economics, engineering, or a related field, or have comparable professional experience. A proven track record in appraising complex environmental and social risks is essential, along with knowledge of international environmental and social standards. Familiarity with financing instruments and policies of international financial institutions is also required. Strong interpersonal skills, effective time management, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team are crucial for success in this role.

Educational Background:
A relevant degree in environmental and/or social sciences, economics, engineering, or a related field is required. Candidates with comparable professional experience may also be considered. The educational background should provide a solid foundation in understanding environmental and social issues, as well as the ability to apply this knowledge in a practical context.

Experience:
Candidates should have substantial experience in project management, particularly in leading or contributing to multi-disciplinary teams. Experience in assessing environmental and social risks and impacts in various sectors is crucial. The ability to communicate complex policy and technical issues effectively to a diverse range of stakeholders is also important. Experience in mentoring and coaching less experienced staff is highly valued, as is a proactive approach to problem-solving and negotiation.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Familiarity with a language spoken in the EBRD countries of operation is advantageous. For positions based in resident offices, local language fluency will be required to facilitate effective communication with stakeholders.
