Job Overview: The Protection Assistant – Legal plays a crucial role in the Danish Refugee Council's mission to provide legal aid and protection services to IDPs, host communities, and returnees in Hudet, Somali region of Ethiopia. Under the supervision of the Protection Officer, the assistant is responsible for implementing protection and legal activities in line with DRC's legal aid policy and standards. This includes identifying beneficiaries, providing legal information and counseling, and facilitating representation for those in need. The assistant will also engage in various protection activities as directed by their supervisor, contributing to the overall objectives of the project. The role requires a proactive approach to addressing the legal needs of vulnerable populations and ensuring their rights are upheld.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Protection Assistant – Legal will undertake a variety of duties aimed at supporting IDPs and conflict-affected populations. Key responsibilities include:
Providing one-on-one legal counseling and assistance to IDPs and other affected individuals to help them claim their legal rights from responsible authorities.
Facilitating access to information on legal issues, including support with restoring civil documentation and identification documents.
Organizing and conducting awareness-raising sessions on recent legal developments relevant to IDPs and other affected populations.
Assisting the protection legal officer in conducting legal and protection assessments using DRC assessment tools.
Facilitating and monitoring incoming and outgoing protection referral cases.
Providing administrative and paralegal assistance to help IDPs access government and non-governmental services.
Supporting the organization of public events such as meetings and technical working groups, and representing DRC at these events.
Developing a weekly work plan in coordination with the Protection Officer and tracking case management in the information management system.
Documenting findings from needs assessments and contributing to monthly reports.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the Protection Assistant – Legal position must possess a strong understanding of federal and regional laws, with a minimum of one year of experience in humanitarian protection or law enforcement. They should demonstrate technical knowledge of core protection concepts and best practices in data collection and protection protocols. The ideal candidate will have experience in identifying and responding to the needs of vulnerable individuals based on protection risks, age, gender, and diversity criteria. A commitment to integrity, a strong work ethic, and the ability to meet deadlines under pressure are essential. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word and Excel, is required, and familiarity with data collection tools such as Kobo is desirable.
Educational Background: A university degree in social work, social science, law, or a related field from a recognized institution is required for this position. Relevant certifications or licenses that enhance the candidate's qualifications will also be considered favorably.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of one year of relevant experience in humanitarian protection or law enforcement. Candidates should have a proven track record of working effectively in challenging environments and addressing the needs of vulnerable populations.
Languages: Fluency in English, including excellent skills in speaking, reading, and writing, is mandatory. Proficiency in Affan Oromo and Somali is also required, as these languages are essential for effective communication with the target populations.
Additional Notes: The contract for this position is for a duration of 7 months, classified under a National Contract Band I2 – Non-Management. The designated duty station is Hudet, Somali region. The start date for the position is as soon as possible. Salary and conditions will be in accordance with the Danish Refugee Council’s Terms of Employment for National employees.
