Job Overview:
The Protection Assistant – Legal will play a crucial role in the Danish Refugee Council's operations in East Borena Field Office, focusing on providing legal aid services to internally displaced persons (IDPs), host communities, and returnees. Under the supervision of the Protection Officer, the assistant will be responsible for carrying out protection and legal activities in accordance with DRC's legal aid policy and standards. This position requires a proactive approach to identifying and targeting beneficiaries, providing legal information, counseling, and assistance, as well as facilitating representation for those in need. The assistant will also be expected to engage in various protection activities as directed by their line manager to achieve the project's objectives. This role is vital in ensuring that vulnerable populations have access to their legal rights and can navigate the complexities of legal systems effectively.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Protection Assistant – Legal will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including but not limited to: providing one-on-one legal counseling and assistance to IDPs and other conflict-affected populations to help them claim their legal rights from responsible authorities; facilitating access to information on legal issues for IDPs and other affected populations, including support with restoring civil documentation and identification documents; organizing and conducting awareness-raising sessions on recent legal developments; assisting the protection legal officer in conducting legal and protection assessments; facilitating and monitoring incoming and outgoing protection referral cases; providing administrative and paralegal assistance to help IDPs access government and non-governmental services; supporting the organization of public events such as meetings and technical working groups; and undertaking any other duties as assigned by the Protection officer or managers. Additionally, the assistant will be responsible for developing a weekly work plan, managing cases, providing input for monthly reports, and documenting findings from needs assessments.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the Protection Assistant – Legal position must possess a strong understanding of federal and regional laws, with a minimum of one year of experience in humanitarian protection or law enforcement offices. They should have a technical understanding of core protection concepts and best practices in prevention and response strategies, as well as ethical data collection and data protection protocols. The ideal candidate will demonstrate integrity, a strong work ethic, and the ability to meet deadlines under pressure. A commitment to learning and implementing organizational policies and procedures is essential, along with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and familiarity with data collection and analysis tools such as Kobo.

Educational Background:
A university degree in social work, social science, law, or a related field from a recognized institution is required for this position. This educational background will provide the necessary foundation for understanding the legal and social frameworks relevant to the work of the Protection Assistant – Legal.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of one year of relevant experience in humanitarian protection or law enforcement. Candidates should have experience in identifying and responding to the needs of vulnerable individuals or groups based on protection risks, age, gender, and diversity criteria. This experience is crucial for effectively supporting IDPs and other conflict-affected populations in navigating legal challenges and accessing necessary services.

Languages:
Fluency in English, with excellent skills in speaking, reading, and writing, is mandatory for this position. Additionally, proficiency in Affan Oromo and Somali is required, as these languages are essential for communicating effectively with the target populations served by the DRC.

Additional Notes:
The contract for this position is for a duration of 7 months, classified as a National Contract under Band I2 – Non-Management. The designated duty station is East Borena, and the start date is as soon as possible. Salary and conditions will be in accordance with the Danish Refugee Council’s Terms of Employment for National employees.
