The FAO is currently involved in a GEF-funded project aimed at sustainable food systems and integrated land/seascape management in the Marshall Islands, which encompasses six atolls: Majuro, Kwajalein, Arrno, Wotje, Jaluit, and Ailinglaplap. This project is designed to integrate food system management into strategic planning and capacity building, promoting sustainable practices and resource management.

Job Overview:
The Project Coordinator (PC) will play a pivotal role in leading the Project Management Unit (PMU) for the FAO's initiative in the Marshall Islands. The PC will work under the guidance of the National Project Director and collaborate closely with various FAO officers and government ministries. The primary focus of this position is to ensure effective coordination and implementation of project activities aimed at transforming food systems and enhancing environmental management. The PC will be responsible for tracking project progress, ensuring compliance with operational agreements, and managing resources effectively to meet project objectives. This role requires a proactive approach to monitoring and evaluation, stakeholder engagement, and capacity building within the local government and communities. The PC will also oversee the preparation of project reports and facilitate communication between various stakeholders to ensure the successful execution of the project.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Project Coordinator will be responsible for a comprehensive set of tasks, including:
  • Coordinating technical and operational implementation of all project activities and outputs, ensuring alignment with the approved work plan and budget.
  • Tracking project progress against targets and preparing monitoring reports.
  • Ensuring compliance with Operational Partners Agreement provisions, including timely reporting and financial management.
  • Supporting the National Project Director in organizing Project Steering Committee meetings and preparing agendas.
  • Leading the monitoring and evaluation of project implementation, including organizing workshops and meetings to assess progress.
  • Submitting six-monthly Project Progress Reports to the Project Steering Committee and FAO.
  • Preparing technical specifications for the procurement of goods and services.
  • Engaging stakeholders as per the Stakeholder Engagement Plan to facilitate project implementation.
  • Collaborating with specialists to implement Environmental and Social Management Plans and ensure gender considerations are integrated into project activities. 1
  • Identifying training needs for local government staff to strengthen project execution capabilities.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a university degree in environmental management, environmental sciences, agriculture science, or a related field. Additionally, a minimum of three years of relevant experience in managing or coordinating regional or national projects related to the environment is required. A working knowledge of English is mandatory, and candidates must be nationals of the Marshall Islands.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a university degree in a relevant field such as environmental management, environmental sciences, or agriculture science. This educational qualification should be obtained from an institution accredited or recognized in the World Higher Education Database (WHED).

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have at least three years of relevant experience in project management or coordination, specifically in regional or national projects that focus on environmental issues. This experience should demonstrate the candidate's ability to manage complex projects and work collaboratively with various stakeholders.

Languages:
A working knowledge of English is required for this position. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset, particularly if they are relevant to the local context or the stakeholders involved in the project.
