Job Overview: As an intern, you will support the GIZ project Low Carbon Sea Transport (LCST) in the Republic of the Marshall Islands. This project aims to promote low-emission shipping technologies and strengthen sustainable maritime cooperation among Pacific island states. The focus will be on both technical innovations and political and strategic processes aimed at decarbonizing the maritime sector in the region. Interns will engage in various activities that contribute to the project's goals, including assisting in the preparation and documentation of regional political consultations, workshops, and events related to the Pacific Sustainable Domestic Maritime Transport Roadmap, as well as Memorandums of Agreement (MoAs). You will also be involved in analyzing and preparing policy and technical information for national, regional, and international partners, and contributing to communication and public relations efforts by creating presentations, reports, and briefing materials for governments, donors, and maritime stakeholders.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
Assisting in the preparation and documentation of regional political consultations, workshops, and events related to the Pacific Sustainable Domestic Maritime Transport Roadmap.
Supporting the analysis and preparation of policy and technical information for national, regional, and international partners.
Contributing to communication and public relations efforts, including the creation of presentations, reports, and briefing materials for governments, donors, and maritime stakeholders.
Providing administrative and logistical support for project activities and missions in close collaboration with the LCST team in Majuro.
Engaging in research and data collection to support project objectives and outcomes.
Participating in team meetings and contributing ideas and feedback to enhance project effectiveness.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must be enrolled students in a relevant field of study such as political science, international relations, engineering, environmental sciences, geography, economics, maritime studies, or related disciplines. Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently in an intercultural environment are essential. A keen interest in maritime decarbonization, climate policy, and regional cooperation in the Pacific is also required. Previous practical experience in development cooperation, maritime economy, or policy processes is desirable. Knowledge of SIDS contexts (Small Island Developing States) or the Pacific region is a plus. Proficiency in creating communication and presentation materials is also beneficial. Intercultural competence and teamwork skills are highly valued.
Educational Background: The position requires candidates to be currently enrolled in a relevant academic program. This could include fields such as political science, international relations, engineering, environmental sciences, geography, economics, maritime studies, or similar areas of study. The internship is only available to those who are currently registered students, are in a training program that includes an internship as an integral part, or have graduated no more than six months prior to the start of the internship.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have some practical experience in development cooperation, maritime economy, or policy processes. While extensive experience is not required, any relevant internships or volunteer work in these areas will be considered advantageous. Familiarity with the specific challenges and opportunities faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS) or the Pacific region will also be beneficial for the role.
Languages: Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is mandatory for this position. Strong communication skills in English are essential for effectively engaging with various stakeholders and partners. While not mandatory, knowledge of additional languages relevant to the Pacific region or international development may be considered an asset.

The monthly intern compensation is €2,205.04 (gross). Additionally, a monthly overseas allowance (gross) will be added to the intern's compensation, determined by GIZ based on the host country.
