Job Overview: The Protection Officer – CPB & HDP will play a crucial role in delivering quality protection and peacebuilding interventions as part of DRC's emergency response efforts. This position requires a strong commitment to the organization's protection strategy and minimum standards. The officer will be responsible for conducting psychosocial-support" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">psychosocial support (PSS), conflict sensitization, and rapid protection assessments (RPA), among other activities. The role involves close collaboration with the protection team leader, assistants, community mobilizers, and other sector teams to enhance DRC's protection and HDP programming in the project locations. The officer will also be expected to contribute to the development of mobile protection centers and ensure effective service delivery through regular updates and documentation of project activities.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Protection Officer will have a wide range of responsibilities, including but not limited to: conducting rapid protection assessments alongside team members, ensuring ethical data collection; contributing to beneficiary selection and distribution of multi-purpose cash and dignity kits; supporting the establishment of mobile protection centers; facilitating service mapping and updating referral pathways; delivering individual and group PSS sessions; forming and training inclusive peacebuilding committees; conducting conflict sensitization and awareness sessions; adhering to protection guidelines and standard operating procedures; monitoring, reporting, and evaluating activities; and carrying out additional protection activities as assigned by the protection team leader. The officer will also be responsible for providing regular contextual updates on project implementation and preparing weekly progress reports on protection activities.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a minimum of 2 years of experience in an entry to mid-level position within humanitarian protection or a relevant social service field. Experience in the Somali region is strongly preferred. Applicants should have a proven record of community engagement and consultation, including assessments, trainings, workshops, or awareness sessions. A technical understanding of core protection concepts and response strategies is essential, along with experience in identifying and responding to the needs of vulnerable individuals based on various criteria. Strong planning, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills are required, as well as integrity and a strong work ethic. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel, is necessary, and familiarity with Kobo and other data collection tools is desirable.
Educational Background: A university degree in social work, social sciences, law, or another relevant field from a recognized institution is required for this position. Candidates should possess the necessary certifications and licenses pertinent to their educational background.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in humanitarian protection or a related social service field. Experience in the Somali region is highly preferred, as it demonstrates familiarity with the local context and challenges faced by communities in need. The candidate should have a solid understanding of community-based protection and peace-building activities, as well as a proven track record of engaging with communities effectively.
Languages: Fluency in English, both spoken and written, is mandatory for this position. Additionally, proficiency in the Affan Oromo language is strongly preferred, as it will facilitate communication with local communities and enhance the effectiveness of protection interventions.
Additional Notes: The contract length for this position is 7 months, and it is classified as a national contract under the H2 – Non-Management band. The designated duty station is East Borena, and the start date is as soon as possible.
