Job Overview:
The HMA Translator/Interpreter position is crucial for ensuring effective communication between national and international DRC staff, government representatives, and other stakeholders. The role encompasses both written and verbal translation during various operational, training, and coordination activities. This includes interpreting during counseling sessions, meetings, and field deployments, which are essential for the operational effectiveness of the Humanitarian Mine Action (HMA) and Humanitarian Disarmament and Peacebuilding (HDP) teams. Additionally, the role involves driving responsibilities, which include transporting Technical Advisors (TA) and the Technical Field Manager (TFM) as required. The successful candidate will be expected to support accurate communication across teams and may be deployed to field locations as part of mobile operations, highlighting the dynamic nature of this position.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The main duties and responsibilities of the Translator/Interpreter include:
  • Providing verbal interpretation between national and international staff, government representatives, and other stakeholders as needed.
  • Ensuring accurate and confidential interpretation during individual and group meetings, training sessions, and operational briefings.
  • Preparing written translations of documents from Ukrainian and/or Russian into English and vice versa.
  • Interpreting training materials, tools, and communications for HMA/HDP courses.
  • Being prepared to join HMA/HDP mobile teams and deploy to operational field locations when required.
  • Performing driving duties, including transportation of TA and TFM.
  • Establishing and maintaining communication with the OPS room and Area South Safety sector.
  • Performing daily maintenance according to the driver’s manual and reporting any problems to DRC HDP TFM and DRC South Fleet Team.
  • Responding to urgent interpretation requests in coordination with the line manager. 1
  • Acting in the interest of beneficiaries, ensuring respectful and sensitive communication. 1
  • Ensuring adherence to the DRC Code of Conduct and safeguarding principles. 1
  • Ensuring adherence to DRC Fleet, Safety, and HMA Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). 1
  • Carrying out any other tasks assigned by the line manager in support of DRC’s operational objectives.

Required Qualifications:
To be considered for this position, candidates must possess the following qualifications:
  • Higher education in Translation (qualification: Translator).
  • Advanced proficiency (C1–C2) in English and Ukrainian; proficiency in Russian is considered an asset.
  • Strong computer literacy, particularly in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • A valid driving license category B with at least 2 years of driving experience and a solid understanding of Ukrainian traffic regulations.
  • High professional ethics and a strong understanding of confidentiality principles.

Educational Background:
Candidates must have a higher education degree in Translation, which qualifies them as a Translator. This educational background is essential for ensuring the accuracy and quality of translations and interpretations required in this role.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 1 year of experience in a similar role or within an international organization. This experience is crucial for demonstrating the necessary skills in communication, translation, and interpretation, which are vital for the successful execution of the responsibilities associated with this position.

Languages:
The mandatory languages for this position include advanced proficiency in English and Ukrainian, with Russian being an asset. This linguistic capability is essential for effective communication and translation in the diverse contexts in which DRC operates.

Additional Notes:
The contract for this position is initially set for a duration of 3 months, with a probation period, and there is a possibility of extension based on funding availability and satisfactory performance. The designation of the duty station is Mykolaiv, and the expected start date for the position is 12th January 202
