The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is the leading United Nations entity in the field of human rights, established to promote and protect all human rights for all people. The OHCHR operates globally, with a specific focus on various regions, including the Middle East and North Africa. The organization is dedicated to ensuring that human rights are upheld as outlined in international human rights instruments, and it engages in activities such as gathering information, conducting investigations, and issuing reports on human rights violations. The Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa, based in Beirut, covers ten countries: Algeria, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. The office prioritizes gender equality and women's rights in its programs and actively collaborates with UN human rights mechanisms, including treaty bodies and special procedures mandate holders. The OHCHR aims to provide technical advice to governments, support civil society organizations, and promote the establishment of national human rights institutions (NHRIs).

Job Overview:
The OHCHR Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa is seeking three online volunteers to assist in various human rights initiatives within the region. The volunteers will engage in research on human rights issues, support campaigns such as Human Rights Day sessions, and contribute to an online awareness campaign focused on gender-based violence. Additionally, they will help prepare and implement a capacity-building activity for 30 members of the MENA Civil Society. This role offers a unique opportunity for individuals to develop and strengthen their skills in human rights monitoring and analysis, while actively contributing to the promotion and protection of human rights in the MENA region. Volunteers will be expected to work collaboratively with the OHCHR team and other stakeholders to achieve the objectives of the assigned tasks.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct research on various human rights issues affecting the MENA region, compiling relevant data and information to support the OHCHR's initiatives.
  • Assist in the preparation and organization of events and sessions for Human Rights Day, ensuring that materials and presentations are ready and effective.
  • Support the development and execution of an online awareness campaign addressing gender-based violence, including creating content and engaging with the target audience.
  • Collaborate with the OHCHR team to prepare and implement a capacity-building activity for 30 members of the MENA Civil Society, focusing on enhancing their understanding of human rights mechanisms and advocacy strategies.
  • Participate in meetings and discussions with OHCHR staff and other volunteers to share insights and progress on assigned tasks.
  • Provide feedback and suggestions for improving the effectiveness of campaigns and activities related to human rights in the region.

Required Qualifications:
  • Strong interest in human rights issues, particularly in the context of the MENA region.
  • Excellent research and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize information from various sources.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively convey ideas and information.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and online communication tools for campaign support.
  • Previous experience in human rights advocacy, research, or related fields is an advantage but not mandatory.

Educational Background:
A background in human rights, international relations, social sciences, or a related field is preferred. Candidates should have a strong understanding of human rights principles and frameworks, as well as familiarity with the socio-political context of the MENA region. Academic qualifications may include a degree or ongoing studies in relevant disciplines.

Experience:
While prior experience in human rights monitoring or advocacy is beneficial, it is not strictly required. The position is open to individuals who are eager to learn and contribute to human rights initiatives. Volunteers should demonstrate a commitment to human rights and a willingness to engage with complex issues affecting the region.

Languages:
Proficiency in English is mandatory, as all communications and tasks will be conducted in this language. Knowledge of Arabic is highly desirable, as it will facilitate engagement with local stakeholders and enhance the effectiveness of campaigns and activities. Additional languages may be considered an asset, depending on the specific needs of the projects.

Additional Notes:
This is a volunteer position, and the duration of the assignment is flexible based on the availability of the volunteers and the needs of the OHCHR. The role is remote, allowing individuals from various locations to apply. Volunteers will gain valuable experience in the field of human rights and have the opportunity to contribute to meaningful initiatives that promote and protect human rights in the MENA region.
