Job Overview:
The purpose of this consultancy position is to provide high-quality technical translation and interpretation services for UNICEF Myanmar. The specialist translators will be responsible for translating program-related documents and providing verbal interpretation during various meetings and events. This role requires collaboration with UNICEF program sections and stakeholders, ensuring effective communication and understanding across different languages. The consultant will support the translation of meeting notes, training materials, and other essential documents, contributing to the overall success of UNICEF's programs in Myanmar. The position is home-based, allowing for flexibility, but may require in-country travel for specific assignments, which will be reimbursed by UNICEF.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Translate documents from Myanmar to English and vice versa, ensuring accuracy and clarity in the content.
  • Provide consecutive and simultaneous interpretation during workshops, trainings, and meetings, facilitating effective communication among participants.
  • Take detailed notes during discussions, translating them as necessary to maintain a clear record of proceedings.
  • Collaborate with UNICEF program focal points and other stakeholders to understand the context and requirements of translation tasks.
  • Support various program components, particularly in Child Protection, by translating advocacy materials, assessments, reports, and training curriculums.
  • Ensure that all translated documents meet UNICEF's high standards for quality and professionalism.
  • Participate in online meetings and provide instant interpretation as required.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to UNICEF's policies and ethical standards in all translation and interpretation activities.

Required Qualifications:
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in English language, English literature, Communications, or Journalism is mandatory.
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Translation studies, Linguistics, English Language and Literature, or a relevant social science or developmental science field is preferred.
  • Fluency in written and oral Myanmar and English is required.
  • Proven experience in instant interpretation and translating child protection materials for NGOs or UN organizations is desirable.
  • Strong understanding of Child Protection terminology, laws, policies, and regulations is an asset.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, is necessary.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment and establish harmonious working relationships.

Educational Background:
Candidates should possess a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in fields related to Translation studies, Linguistics, English Language and Literature, or relevant social sciences. This educational background is essential to ensure that the candidate has the necessary skills and knowledge to perform high-quality translations and interpretations.

Experience:
Candidates must have at least 5 years of relevant experience in translation and interpretation, particularly in contexts related to child protection and humanitarian work. This experience should demonstrate the ability to meet high international standards in translation quality and effective communication.

Languages:
Fluency in both written and oral Myanmar and English is mandatory for this position. Candidates with additional language skills may have an advantage, but the primary requirement is proficiency in these two languages.

Additional Notes:
The consultancy contract is initially for one year, with the possibility of extension for up to two additional years based on performance and organizational needs. The position is home-based, but any required in-country travel will be reimbursed. Payment will be made upon completion of deliverables and submission of invoices.
