Job Overview:
The intern will work under the supervision of the chief of the office for Europe in Brussels. The primary focus of this internship will be to support the development and organization of an expert group meeting on urban indicators and data in Europe, scheduled for June 202
  • Additionally, the intern will engage in various activities conducted by UN-Habitat in Europe, which may include providing administrative support. The intern will also be involved in following the work of the European Commission’s Housing Taskforce and the European Parliament’s Committee on Housing. This role is designed to provide valuable experience in the field of urban planning and human settlements, while also contributing to significant projects that aim to improve housing conditions and urban development in Europe.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for several key tasks, including:
  • Supporting background research for the expert group meeting, which will focus on a theme that is yet to be defined.
  • Identifying suitable speakers for the expert group meeting to ensure a diverse and knowledgeable panel.
  • Assisting in the development of two projects focused on cooperative housing and housing for Roma communities, which are critical areas of urban development and social inclusion.
  • Providing support to the office team by taking notes during meetings, managing meeting requests, and performing similar administrative tasks. These responsibilities will allow the intern to gain hands-on experience in the workings of a UN agency and contribute to meaningful initiatives in urban development.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria at the time of application: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent), c. Have graduated with a Bachelor's degree, Master's, PhD, or equivalent. Additionally, candidates must be computer literate in standard software applications, particularly the Microsoft Office Suite. A demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter are essential. Candidates should also exhibit the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs, showing a willingness to understand and tolerate differing opinions and views.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes being a student in the final year of a first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or being enrolled in a Master's or Ph.D. programme, or having completed a Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. programme. Preferred areas of study include social sciences, urban planning, geography, or similar fields that relate closely to the internship's focus on urban development and human settlements.

Experience:
While applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience, it is essential that their field of study is closely related to the type of internship they are applying for. This means that candidates should ideally have academic experience or coursework that aligns with urban planning, social sciences, or related disciplines, which will help them contribute effectively to the tasks assigned during the internship.

Languages:
The working languages of the United Nations Secretariat are English and French. For this internship position, fluency in both oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is considered desirable, as it may enhance communication and collaboration within the diverse environment of the UN.
