Interns are expected to be between the ages of 20 and 36 and should possess less than two years of relevant work experience. The programme aims to provide interns with practical experience in the field of migration, particularly in the area of labour migration pathways between third countries and Belgium. Interns will work under the supervision of the Head of Unit of Labour Mobility and Social Inclusion and will assist in various project management tasks, including the implementation of labour migration pathways, policy support, and outreach activities. This role offers a unique opportunity to gain insights into the workings of an international organization and to contribute to meaningful projects that address labour shortages in Belgium.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for providing standard assistance with the implementation and follow-up of project activities across participating countries. This includes supporting the project manager in tracking work plans and deliverables, organizing meetings, and drafting meeting minutes. The intern will also assist in identifying and liaising with stakeholders, creating visibility content, and supporting outreach efforts to civil society and other stakeholders. Additionally, the intern will help prepare presentations and reports related to labour pathways, participate in meetings and conferences, and undertake any other tasks as required by the project management team.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level) or have graduated within the last 12 months. They should have a specific interest in migration issues and may be required to hold a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations. Additionally, candidates should be between 20 and 36 years of age and possess a valid residence and work permit for Belgium.
Educational Background: A Bachelor’s degree in economics, human rights, social science, or a related field from an accredited academic institution is required. Accredited universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database. Applicants must meet specific educational requirements at the time of application, including being enrolled in a graduate programme or having graduated within the past year.
Experience: Basic knowledge of the Belgian context and policies related to migration and labour market integration is essential. Previous working or volunteering experience within the national public sector or NGOs related to migration is considered an asset. Experience working with multi-country, multi-partner project teams is also advantageous.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, along with proficiency in either Dutch or French. IOM's official languages include English, French, and Spanish, and candidates will be evaluated on their language skills during the selection process, which may involve written and/or oral assessments.
Additional Notes: There are two internship positions available, with start dates of 1 March 2026 and 1 August 2026, respectively. The internship is subject to local recruitment, meaning only individuals with a valid residence and work permit for Belgium will be considered. Interns are expected to apply for scholarships to cover their living expenses during the internship. The internship positions are unpaid, but interns may receive a small monthly stipend to help offset costs, depending on their experience and location. IOM provides coverage for occupational accidents and illnesses but does not offer medical insurance for non-occupational issues. Interns are responsible for their own medical insurance and must provide proof of coverage before starting work. IOM maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding misconduct and does not charge any fees during the recruitment process.
