The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide. They work with partners to integrate qualified, highly motivated and well supported UN Volunteers into development programming and promote the value and global recognition of volunteerism. UNV is administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and reports to the UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS Executive Board. Headquartered in Bonn, Germany, UNV has around 150 staff members at headquarters, and 8,500 UN Volunteers deployed in the field.

The organization operates six Regional Offices located in Amman, Bangkok, Dakar, Istanbul, Nairobi, and Panama City, which serve as the primary entry points for partners wishing to engage with UNV. These offices provide a range of services and solutions to government partners, UN entities, civil society, and the private sector, while also offering oversight and strategic guidance to UNV's field units across various regions.

Job Overview:
The position of Online Volunteer is focused on the development of a digital publication or e-book that showcases inspiring stories from UN Volunteers across the Pacific region. This role is essential for advocacy, communication, and outreach efforts, as the final product will highlight the impact and experiences of volunteers. The Online Volunteer will be responsible for designing and laying out a visually engaging publication that is approximately 10 to 15 pages in length. This includes incorporating text, photos, and other visual elements provided by the UNV team, ensuring that the publication aligns with UNV and UNDP branding guidelines. The volunteer will also propose creative concepts for layout and visual storytelling, making the publication both appealing and easy to read. Regular check-ins with the UNV Communications team will be necessary to refine drafts and incorporate feedback, ensuring the final product meets the organization's standards and objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Online Volunteer will have a variety of responsibilities, including:
  • Designing and laying out a visually engaging A4-size, full-colour publication that is approximately 10 to 15 pages long.
  • Incorporating text, photos, and visual elements provided by the UNV team to effectively highlight the impact and experiences of volunteers.
  • Ensuring compliance with branding guidelines, aligning the publication with the visual identity of UNV and UNDP.
  • Proposing creative concepts for layout, typography, and visual storytelling to enhance the publication's appeal and readability.
  • Preparing final files in both PDF and web-friendly formats for online sharing.
  • Participating in periodic check-ins with the UNV Communications team to refine drafts and receive constructive feedback throughout the design process.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the Online Volunteer position should possess a strong background in graphic design, digital publishing, or a related field. They should have experience with design software such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, or similar tools. A keen eye for detail, creativity, and the ability to work independently while meeting deadlines are essential. Familiarity with UN branding and visual identity guidelines is a plus, as is experience in volunteerism or non-profit sectors. Strong communication skills are also important for collaborating with the UNV Communications team and incorporating feedback effectively.

Educational Background:
A degree or equivalent qualification in graphic design, visual communication, digital media, or a related field is preferred. Candidates should demonstrate a solid understanding of design principles and practices, as well as proficiency in relevant design software. Additional certifications or training in digital publishing or related areas may be advantageous.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have prior experience in graphic design or digital publication development, with a portfolio showcasing relevant work. Experience working with non-profit organizations or in volunteerism is beneficial but not mandatory. The ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously while maintaining high-quality standards is crucial for success in this role.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as all communication and publication materials will be in English. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly those spoken in the Pacific region, would be considered an asset but is not required.

This is a volunteer position, and as such, it may not offer financial compensation. The role is expected to be flexible in terms of hours, allowing the volunteer to work remotely from Fiji.
