The UNEP Regional Office for West Asia is located in Beirut, Lebanon, and focuses on enhancing climate change awareness and knowledge across the region, particularly in Qatar.
Job Overview: The UNV Programme Associate position is designed to support projects aimed at enhancing climate change awareness and knowledge in Qatar. This role involves assisting in national planning and policy formulation by integrating vulnerability, adaptation, and mitigation measures into climate strategies. The Programme Associate will engage with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, governmental agencies, and research institutions, to foster a better understanding of climate impacts and mitigation strategies. The expected outcomes of this role include improved national capacity for climate change reporting, better integration of climate considerations into development plans, and increased stakeholder engagement in climate action. The position requires a proactive approach to understanding public perceptions and behavioral responses to climate risks, ultimately contributing to sustainable lifestyle choices and community engagement.
Duties and Responsibilities: The UNV Programme Associate will be responsible for conducting desk research on the behavioral and psychological drivers of climate action in Qatar. This includes identifying and summarizing best practices in behavioral change for climate mitigation and adaptation. The Associate will support the integration of behavioral insights into relevant chapters and analyses of the Biennial Transparency Report (BTR). Additionally, the role involves assisting in the preparation of communication and awareness materials that promote climate-friendly behaviors. The Programme Associate will also contribute to workshops and outreach activities focused on behavioral change and sustainable lifestyles, while providing coordination and reporting support related to behavioral change inputs within the BTR process.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the UNV Programme Associate position should possess strong research and analytical skills, particularly in the context of climate change and behavioral science. They should demonstrate a capacity for effective communication and the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders. The role requires adaptability and flexibility, as well as creativity in developing outreach materials and strategies. Professionalism and self-management are essential, as the Associate will be working independently and as part of a team.
Educational Background: A degree in environmental science, social sciences, psychology, or a related field is required for this position. Candidates with advanced degrees or specialized training in climate change, behavioral science, or related disciplines will be given preference. A strong academic background that includes coursework or research related to climate change and public engagement is highly desirable.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have some experience in research, particularly in areas related to climate change, environmental policy, or behavioral science. Experience working with governmental agencies, NGOs, or international organizations in a similar capacity will be advantageous. Familiarity with climate change reporting processes and stakeholder engagement strategies is also beneficial.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as all communications and reports will be conducted in English. Knowledge of Arabic is highly desirable, given the regional focus of the projects and the need to engage with local stakeholders effectively. Additional language skills may be considered an asset.
Additional Notes: This is a national UN Volunteer assignment based in UN House, Beirut, Lebanon. The UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging their own housing and living essentials.
