Job Overview:
The position of Chauffeur Principal at UNICEF in Nouakchott, Mauritanie, is a critical role that involves providing reliable and safe driving services to the Representative of UNICEF in Mauritania. The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring the highest level of professionalism, discretion, integrity, and adherence to local driving regulations. The Chauffeur Principal will also be expected to demonstrate a customer-oriented approach, a strong sense of responsibility, courtesy, and the ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures. This role is essential for facilitating the movement of UNICEF personnel and ensuring that they can carry out their duties effectively and safely.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Chauffeur Principal will be tasked with the following duties and responsibilities:
  • Provide reliable and safe driving services for the Representative, senior officials, and UN visitors in Nouakchott and field locations.
  • Welcome high-ranking officials and visitors at the airport and assist with basic visa and customs procedures when necessary.
  • Ensure that the assigned vehicle is maintained in good working condition at all times, conducting daily checks and reporting significant issues to the Associate in Administration.
  • Keep accurate documentation related to the vehicle, including insurance, registration, logbook, office directory, first aid kit, and necessary spare parts.
  • Assist in managing protocol-related activities for the Representative and support the administration team in daily vehicle and driver management.
  • Track monthly mileage and maintenance of all vehicles, prepare travel authorizations for field trips, and coordinate annual uniform fittings for drivers.
  • Collaborate with all drivers for vehicle maintenance and annual inspections of zone office vehicles.

Required Qualifications:
To be considered for this position, candidates must possess the following qualifications:
  • A secondary education diploma is required, along with a valid driver's license and knowledge of local driving rules and regulations.
  • At least three years of professional driving experience in an international institution, NGO, embassy, or development project/program. Experience within the UN system is an asset.
  • Mechanical training is a plus.
  • A valid driving license (category C or higher) is mandatory.
  • Basic computer skills (Excel, Word, Email) are required.
  • Availability for frequent travel within the country and experience driving on rough terrain.
  • Good knowledge of Mauritania's regions and road networks is essential.

Educational Background:
Candidates must have completed secondary education and possess a valid driver's license. Knowledge of local driving regulations is also required to ensure compliance with safety standards.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of three years of professional driving experience, preferably in an international organization, NGO, or similar environment. Experience within the United Nations system is considered an advantage, as it demonstrates familiarity with the protocols and expectations of working in such settings.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written French is mandatory. Knowledge of national languages would be an asset, enhancing communication with local communities and stakeholders.
